I love things like this. We have a chain link fence running along the side of our house and into our backyard that has been twisted and distorted by a line of trees growing over it and into it. Mother Nature is a great artist.
I wonder if there's an instinctive reaction at work that makes some people find weirdly deformed plants kind of disgusting? The same thing happened with this MeFi post about plant galls, where a number of commenters (including me) thought they were icky.
A "don't eat plants that have something obviously wrong with them" instinct seems like it might convey a very slight survival advantage if such plants are occasionally dangerous to eat.
