Betelgeuse! No, just kidding. (Though really, if it's Miss Universe, c'mon now.)
I've got to say that Miss Great Britain certainly earns an award for "Least Sexy Costume imaginable." Man, that's awful. Such an otherwise attractive woman in such a heinous get-up.
Also notable: Miss Peru for winning the award for "I Figured Out How to Put a Lamp on My Head And Call it Part of My Costume." Miss Panama for "Using Those Circle Things That Show Up in Those Married to the Sea Comics." Miss Kosovo for "Best Invoking Baal And That Whole Golden Calf Thing." And Miss Belguim for "Best Use of Tennis Racket."
My favorites: Miss France and... dare I say it? Miss Norway. My Swedish family members have all ex-communicated me, but I care not. That's a classy outfit. (Miss Sweden? Looks redonkulous.) Miss China, also very classy. Clearly, I am not a BIG HEADDRESS kind of gal.
Thanks for posting these again - I really enjoy them, and I could give two shakes about costumes or fashion 364 days out of the year. It's really a bewildering array of inexplicable headgear this time around, with Miss Dominican Republic spearheading *cough* that particular category.
Among the ones that try to use some traditional folk motifs I thought Georgia was particularly nice.
Most likely to suffer a catastrophic run-in with a confused salad bar patron: Miss Guam. (That category a little underpopulated this year).
"Hang a Lampshade On It" Award: Miss Peru.
Remarkable Forbearance While Affixed To A Gilt Goathead Award: Miss Kosovo.
At Least It Wasn't Little Pictures of Waffles Award: Miss Belgium.
Comment That I Can't Improve Upon: "GURL YOU LOOK LIKE A STRIPPER THAT FELL INTO A ROSE BUSH"
Best Match of Contestant to Costume: Miss Ireland.
Hourglass Award: Miss Mexico
So Adorable I Want To Give Her Hot Chocolate With Tiny Marshmallows Award: Guess.
Norway and China definately stayed as classy as possible. I like Nigeria too, and I like Ukraine's simple Wheat number. Egypt is strangely compelling, and yes, the Great Britian costume is awwwwful. Innnadawwful, as we say with glee in the South.
I LOVE me some Miss Curacao. Miss USA is surprisingly awesometacular; I love the sort of Art Deco Goddess thing she's got going on there. Miss Canada is also fantabulous as well, in a tasteful ensemble that still manages to look delightfully joan Collins.
Miss Zambia? Oh, honey.
This was the perfect thing to look at while watching RuPaul's DragU.
I love that these are all describes as "national costumes", as if we would see an army of Croatian Bead Queens walking to the Croatian equivalent of 7-11 at two in the morning to get the Croatian equivalent of Gatorade for their sick kids.
"Mom, did you go yet?"
"No, my child, I'm still looking for my bead garlands!"
"Mooooooooom, can I have orange instead of lemon-lime?"
"Shhhh, you'll wake up your sister. Do you have enough tissues?"
...
I take it all back, now that I think about it, I had a very similar gold eagle outfit on last weekend. It wholly is representative of what we wear in the USA. Must have just been the angle.
The USA is surprisingly awesome and Norway's dress is just georgeous, but I think I like Switzerland the best. She's adorable and has a sword! (Italy also has a sword, but doesn't look nearly as excited about it.) Albania is my second favorite.
I liked the simplicity of France, until I noticed the Eiffel tower attached to the top of her beret. Also in the "crap on your head" category: Dominican Republic and Angola, Kosovo being mentioned already.
I expected more of Greece, and thought the Columbia costume looked more like it was from Egypt.
GOSSIP about the norway-girl, she moved to Norway with her Botswanian mother and Norwegian father in 1998 when she was 12 years old. That factoid made me feel prehistoric. These girls are in their twenties and it only hit me now that it was a long time ago that I was. Did I sleep through the last decade or what?
