Oh man, I never had a chemistry set, but these are making me wish I had. On the other hand, it's probably just as well I didn't, given the number of near-disastrous experiences I managed to have involving fire as it was.
I did have a bunch of those electronics experiment kits though, the kind that have a variety of components permanently mounted to a cardboard backing, and loose wires that you clamped into little springs to create circuits. Bending those springs would make your fingertips hurt after a while, but the probability of fire or explosion was quite low.
I never had an actual chemistry set, but did plenty of experimenting with chemicals that we 'borrowed' from school and other stuff we 'found'. We also spent a lot of time blowing things up with petrol and other flammable substances, as well as fireworks around Guy Fawkes (back in the day when any kid could walk into a newsagent and buy explosives at certain times of the year and the shopkeeper wouldn't blink an eye).
