Is Shirley Jackson a great American writer? [More:] I agree with this article that yes, she basically is. I've only read her short stories, though, and this has reminded me that I really should read her two novels.
Yes. Next question? ;-)

Yes. I didn't even look at the article.

And yes, I haven't read the other yet, but I love We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

Reasonable people might disagree, but yeah, I think she is.

I also don't need to read the article to answer yes to that one. Reading "The Lottery" in sixth grade caused me to pause and think that perhaps school wasn't such a waste of time after all.

Really? Maybe I'd need to read something other than The Lottery, but I wouldn't have said so.

Sure she is. Although I think The Lottery is her masterpiece. (Still gives me chills, too.)

Miko, try "One Ordinary Day with Peanuts", a short story.

'Life among the Savages' and 'Raising Demons' are my fav books of hers, dealing with mundane life of being a housewife and raising kids.

Yeah, Raising Demons is fantastic.

The Lottery is the only work of hers I know. I'll have to search out more.
