How do I find a financial planner who does not get a commission for selling me products? I am lost here.
You should send small_ruminant a MeMail. She probably has lots of good advice for you and is in the industry (or was a year or so ago).

I don't know, but your post reminded me of the time I sat in on a CFP info session at Fairly-Ridiculous. Two hours was enough for me to know it's not for me!

I can help with basic stuff/translation/fact-checking if you find one you don't trust completely. There are several bunnies who are more versed in the markets than I am, though (but I'm not going to offer their services!).

Thanks, guys. I found a guy who is a fee-only certified financial planner and CPA and I don't think he sells anything, so I am going to try him.

Here is a relevant page from the SEC website.

Also, check out the NAPFA (Nat'l Assoc of Personal Financial Advisors), which is the industry organization for fee-only advisors.

In which I totally overthink a haircut. Help a socially awkward mechazen out. || This party DJ will rock your orthopedic socks off.
