I just authorized a sterotactic ablation of brain tissue for a guy with a brain tumor, bless him. What are you up to?
Working from home, heading into town later to meet a friend, Ramona, who's in town from NYC.
I've done four loads of laundry already today. It's a perfect drying day - warm, but with enough of a breeze to stir the clothes on the line. I love getting into a bed that has line-dried sheets on it.
Working for now, trying to do it fast so I can knock off early and watch the Murray/Nadal match. Will buy fruit on the way home.
In my breaks, looking at the Guardian website. Normally the commenters are full of snark but I've been enjoying the supportive/amazed answers to this question(NSFW).
I'm at work, sick and running a fever, covering for someone else who has the holiday weekend off. REALLY not happy things worked out this way. Also, working with an out-of-town producer who's getting on my nerves, prob. because I feel so crappy. (His first words when I walked in at 7 AM this morning were, "How late do you think you can stay tonight?" OMGWTFBBQ)
At work and upset b/c usually I have very little to do, but somehow everything has converged at once and shortly I'm going to have a lot of complicated and/or time-consuming things to do, and it's the Friday of a long weekend and I don't wanna.
Woke up after only 4 hours of sleep (but I'll be napping after I go to the gym this afternoon, like I usually do). I have a doctor's appointment at 1130 which I hope goes well. I want to try and clear a bunch of tiny things off my to do list for today and then possibly start on schoolwork for the week. (Of course, my gym/shower/nap plans may get in the way of that.)
I am also at work, and so tired I may as well be drunk. I don't think I'm still drunk though.
It's a ghost town here because Canada Day fell on a Thursday, so all the smart people took Friday off, turning it into a 4 day weekend. Sadly, I never notice when things like that are coming, so end up being the guy in the office with tumbleweeds rolling down the cubicle aisles.
So, I'm almost done reading the whole internet and listening to Bowie's Hunky Dory. I really like this record.
Trying to get a handle on the way this place budgets, once and for all. Setting up a binder system to bring budget proposals, reforecasts, and reports all into one place. Off in a minute for a meeting with the CFO. I can do numbers, but they are not my strength nor my inclination - much more of a humanities person. Would rather be writing exhibit labels :). But it's FRIDAY of a 3-DAY WEEKEND so I am pretty happyfeeling.
Not too much...might do some cleaning this weekend, or a sewing project, or both. I've managed to cut my number of sewing projects from 15 down to 10 or so, woo-hoo!
I decided to get a gas BBQ. Bought a low end one at a local box store: It was on sale. . the assembled floor model was the only one left.
Got it, bought a propane cylinder at the same place then went and got it filled up. So far so good. But then I could not get the propane in to the grill to save my soul. Borrowed the neighbor's propane cylinder, it worked. So I must have a bad container. I stopped by the store on my way by to ask about this. Got into a side conversation with the sporting goods guy about the fact that this store sells out of ammo the day they get it delivered. I ask him why and he says that Pelosi, Biden, and Obama (in that order) are trying to take away people's guns. I ask if he's ever heard Obama even MENTION guns, and he gets huffy and says that Obama supports a gun ban. So then he just tosses the brochure from the company to me and tells me to call them. No more help for me.
So I do, and the company tells me to try a few things and if they do not work, take it back for an exchange. I try a few things, they don't work so I go back to this store and tell the manager my story and ask for an exchange. They are pissed off about his but finally, after getting 4 people involved, they let me go back and exchange the bottle. I had to lose the $14 bucks worth of propane in the first container. Anyway, I get this bottle filled, and then the SAME thing happens. Does not work. At this point I am past the point of frustration, spending so much time on this dipshit little thing.
So I go to my neighbor. . .try his container, which works. And so I say, let's try mine on yours. . and for some reason it works on his, but not on mine. So we agree to just trade. . he got more propane in the deal but I was glad to just get a working BBQ due to the party we are having tomorrow night.
So, that is what I have been up to. Glad ya asked?
I'm at home with another horrible cold. Again. It's been four days so far. I AM SO BORED. And I'm starting to wonder why I get so ill so often.
I'm out of soup and juice and The Fella is out of town for a few days, so I may have to totter out for supplies later. I feel like I should wear a bell and holler "unclean!" to warn the villagers.
Eating lunch while listening to a man in a tall purple tophat play the pipe organ in the State Office Building in Juneau. This morning I did some performance evaluations for my remote staff. You think those are hard to receive? They are super hard to give. Gah. But now they are done and I have nothing more to do here. 8 hours until my flight back home.
Trying to get a handle on the way this place budgets, once and for all.
Heh, I've been trying to do the same lately. I'm responsible for a budget of close to $6m and yet there is no way I can allocate any but a few small amounts myself, plus nobody can really tell me where the figures come from. Of course, when I say 'responsible for' I mean that in public service terms - I have to make sure we spend it all, but no more because, if we don't spend it all this year, we lose it for next year when we may really need it. God forbid we should do some long-term financial planning! If we spend too much, we are also likely to lose money for next year. For one budget item which is part of our core business and which we have no choice but to spend, we have consistently overspent the $250k allocated by $150k even though we keep asking for $400k. What did they do this year? Took the whole amount away until I kicked and screamed and explained what the effect would be of us not spending $400k on this item. What was the result? We got our $250k back. So I had to allocate (again) $150k from somewhere else so that we can spend the $400k. In the meantime, I see other government agencies throwing money down the drain.
