Tomboy Style — To define a tomboy requires searching far beyond the simple notion of wearing boy's clothing. Tomboys have influenced the expanses of popular culture including fashion, film, music, and literature. Although the tomboy is often identified by clothing, what makes her wholly so is an inherent sense of confidence, rebelliousness, and adventure.
Fabulous! Added to my blogroll.

Neat blog but I have to draw a line between "tomboy style" and being an actual tomboy.

Exactly, jess. I think I saw about three women in there I would call tomboys.... June Carter Cash, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Pancho Barnes. There are probably others that are, but those three made the cut without trying. The rest, it's just a style. They're poseurs.

People seem to have vastly differing definitions of 'tomboy'.

Also, I want a name for that terrible scene in every fucking movie featuring a tomboy where the tomboy puts on a dress.

Also, WTF Juliette Lewis??!

This was worth it for that picture of June Carter Cash.

I guess I'm a tomboy, but I've never liked the name. It's like, why? I'm actually a girl, and just because I don't get too into a strict gender-role approach to clothing and makeup and behavior doesn't make me any kind of a boy, "tom" or otherwise.

You can't be a "tomboy" by dressing like one, anyway.

further thought: to me, "tomboy" means "behaves as if free."

Janelle Monae was referenced on Sociological Images a while back as Degendering Dance with this video.

The comment from user Anna was absolutely excellent, the best part of that post. I agree with her assessment of the moves quoting dance back to the 1920s, but also that it isn't "degendered" at all, really can't be:

That said, from a dance perspective, the moves in Janelle’s video are without gender assignment, but there is an expectation that one’s gendered identity will be, must be expressed through the execution of the moves. That is the evolution of these forms which still have strong gender-based repertoire in Senegal. The Congo, people tend to do the same moves. The men MOVE their hips. It is de rigeur in pop as well as “traditional” dance music.
