Merry-Go-Rounds are eternal and that is fucking awesome. →[More:]

So I'm sitting here in Bryant Park, enjoying a salad, and watching parents watch their kids on the Merry-Go-Round, and it hits me.

1. This is a perfect day.

2. They still have merry-go-rounds! And kids are still totally AMPED to ride them.

I know a lot of you are parents. What kinds of thing are you surprised that kids still do? A lot of my youthful hangouts (arcades, record shops, and to a lesser extent comic book stores) have gone the way of the dodo. What endures?

And the seasons, they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down...

The fact that the original Star Wars is still popular as it is amazes me. I mean, we all have cell phones now, not communicators...

Anyway, a lot of classic board games still prevail, like Candy Land and Sorry and Monopoly.

I love that kids will still spend hours upon hours at the beach, working their little tuchases off building sand structures, digging holes, making "rivers," collecting shells and animals.

I was recently amazed to find out that my girls think escalators are FUCKING AWESOME.

I guess I'd kind of forgotten that they ARE.

My sons (19 & 22) still play Pokemon with their friends. That makes me scratch my head sometimes...

My daughter (10) goes to the local dagashiya, right across the street from our local park, with her friends, just like kids in this Tokyo neighborhood have been doing for a looong time...
