I've been watching some excellent movies lately [More:]
I've been on a "Film" kick for months now, and have been slowly working my way through various classics, influential art-house type films, and just generally interesting movies.

In the last several weeks I've really liked Nothing But a Man, Le Petit Jerusalem, 10 Items or Less, The Apartment, and a string of older Almodovar films.

Have you seen anything awesome recently?
May has been the only outstanding movie for me recently, but the viewer needs to have a taste for such movies.

I liked George Clooney in The Men Who Stare At Goats but I thought the script needed tightening. Alice in Wonderland was OK but I have concluded that the two books are unfilmable. Girl, Interrupted was better than I thought it would be, but I expected more from Winona Ryder.

Not a movie, but the season finale of Doctor Who was pretty great. Matt Smith has turned out to be a pleasantly huge surprise.

Also not a movie, but my husband and I are halfway through the second season of Deadwood. It does indeed live up to the hype.

Last night I watched The Fantastic Mr. Fox. My husband loves this movie and has watched it three times. He finally convinced me to watch. I loved it, too.

More memorable movies that I've seen lately: Swimming Pool, Revanche, Marion Bridge.

As far as TV goes, husband and I are working our way through season one of Damages. It's good. Glenn Close can act.

Why the hell is BBC America three weeks late with episodes? Do they ship the tapes on the Queen Mary? I either have to figure out how to download bootleg copies or stick my fingers in my ears and go "laa laa laa" for three weeks.

The Secret In Their Eyes was awesome.

Just finished reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I'm seeing the movie tonight.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox - my wife and I liked it more that we thought we would, though it was a Wes Anderson film in a way that sort of detracted from the film (at least for me, in retrospect).

Thanks to our ridiculous fancy new TV with its built-in wireless connection and Netflix on demand, my wife has been educating me in 1950s films. Auntie Mame was fantastic, and though I'm sure I've seen part(s) of How to Marry a Millionaire, seeing it (in full) for the first time was grand.

Not movies: Murder, She Wrote. My wife always knows where the story is going, and who the murderer is within the first 10 minutes of a show, but MSW is more subtle. And there's a lot of interesting material in the show, from weird technology (seriously, almost every episode has a key piece of "technology" featured in some way, from metal detectors to driverless cars), social norms (May–December romances, roles of women and minorities in the workplace) and more. We're now watching the show to pick out weird trends, with the notion of starting a running blog on the show as we watch it.

I like Matt Smith but mostly I like that he has a companion that does not annoy the hell out of me. So happy that we are unlikely to see Rose again.
