Stupid email forwards: what have you read lately? [More:]

"You can replace cholesterol drugs with drinking hot water after every meal. It melts fats so they pass out of the stomach undigested. A page on Snopes.com says this is a hoax but my sister-in-law's sister-in-law is a nurse and she says that it is true."

That's just the gist of the entire article, but this makes me wonder how many people will die from internet misinformation. That bit about Snopes has been popping up a lot lately.
I haven't read an email forward for years. Luckily, I nipped that in the bud from annoying relatives a long time ago. It is my understanding that my husband still gets them from his dad. And his dad is one of those people who emails everything to everyone in his address book. Without hiding recipients.

From his work computer.

And he works for the Dept. of Defense. Yes.

I don't really get forwards much. My family has finally learned how to copy and paste.

Heh. I made a rule in Outlook to junk mail any mail with "FW" in the subject line. I gave up on asking friends and family to stop sending them.

I seemed to have picked the right friends and family. I used to get some dumb jokes forwarded by an ex- but she's stopped doing that. Other than that, nothing.

I get one now and then from my mom who gets them from my aunt. I let her do it because she only sends maybe one a month and they're always the humorous sort, rather than the political kind. Fortunately I trained my mom in Snopes, but I did once block a cousin who kept sending me forwards. Once, said cousin replied "but it's a MISSING CHILD now don't you feel bad?!!" I showed her the Snopes page where the kid either wasn't missing or had been found already but she didn't care in the least.

Someone sent me an article about a high school raising a Mexican flag instead of an American one, and therefore now that Obama's in office, the country is going to hell. I looked up the article at the original source. It was 4 years old. When Bush was in office. AFAIK our country has not literally been taken over by Mexico in the last 4 years.

The original sender had everyone on the CC line, so I replied to all hoping to 1) educate the rest of them and 2) embarrass the sender into thinking twice. The sender told me that the actual facts didn't matter, our country was still sliding into ruin. She hasn't sent me anything else since, though.

That really sums it up, doesn't it?

Yeah, my (least) favorite was the one about Colin Powell saying that the only territory we wanted was enough to bury our soldiers.

I did the same thing desjardins did, and got "what's your point?" in response - and gibberish about "your president apologizing for this great country".

And yes, the going story is that snopes is a left leaning organization and can't be trusted.

Run by Canadians, IIRC.

Thanks to facebook, I no longer get e-mail forwards!

I can't remember the last time I got one, thankfully.

Sheesh, six of them this morning from my father's girlfriend. I hit Reply To All and scolded her. I wonder if this will make me the black sheep or the courageous hero.

I hadn't received one in ages until last week when one of my brothers sent the whole family a bunch of crap. My awesome oldest brother sent back a link to Snopes correcting the stupid thing (Obama not saluting thing).

I got this one just today from a guy I used to work with years ago:

Guess The Nationality

It's tougher than one would think:
