Wii! So I'm thinking about getting a Wii (and Wii Fit)...[More:]

Wii-people, what should I get if I get a wii? Do I have to buy the nunchuks? Protector thingies so I don't put a wiimote through the tv? Is there a special charger for wiimotes?

I probably won't go berserk on games, but what stuff should I make sure I get? And how is Netflix for the Wii? OMG SO MANY QUESTIONS.

(I'm totally planning to pay a pilgrimage to this bad boy if any NYC bunnies want to join me tomorrow).
Oh, and will it work with a regular TV, or do I have to buy a S-Video to RCA adapter? By regular, I mean 10-yr-old CRT.

I have a Wii! It works with my regular TV. But you have to have those yellow and white outlets on the TV to hook it up to. I can't get more technical than that, sorry.

It comes with one Wiimote that has a protective case.

I love House of the Dead: Overkill! Zombie killin'!

Netflix for the Wii is super cool, but there are tons of movies that you can't get on it. None of the more recent, popular films are available I don't think.

We use ours with an even older TV using RCA connectors (the red, white and yellow thingies).

We bought a pack that had a remote with cover and a nunchuck then bought the kids their own for Christmas. You can buy rechargeable batteries and chargers but we use regular cheap AA batteries bought in bulk and they last a fair while, so I don't think it's worth the cost of rechargables. The battery in the Wii Fit pad last for ages.

Wii Fit is lots of fun!

Don't bother with extra nunchucks unless you know the games you want require them. Or you plan to play a lot of Wii Sports boxing.

Super Paper Mario is a really awesome game. Super Mario Galaxy & the new sequel don't interest me because they are supposed to be sequels of Super Mario 64 which I found too hard. New Super Mario Bros. for the DS was awesome so I imagine the Wii version (which is a different game with different levels) is too.

I do enjoy streaming Netflix over the Wii. Before it was a pain to do it on my laptop... now I'm comfortable watching on my TV.

Oh, and I don't have any injuries (yet), but trust me on this: Wear the wristband.

Yah, it comes with RCA connectors.
The recommended thing used to be to buy Wii Play with your Wii - it includes a bunch of mini games, & includes a 2nd Wii-Mote & nunchuk (I think?) cheaper than to buy them seperately.

We've gone on to buy 2 more Wii-Motes, but still only have 2 nunchuks.
The Wii-Motes all come with a silicon sleeve. WEAR THE WRISTBAND TO AVOID MURDERING YOUR TEEVEE.

You can buy special chargers, or use rechargeable batteries. I've found a source of dirt cheap AA batteries so we just use those, as I've found rechargeable AAs to be rubbish in the long run.

Games:
I prefer the active games on the Wii, and do my serious shooting of zombies on the PC.

If you're looking for fitness type games, I love:
Wii Fit, (now Wii Fit Plus)
Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party (1 & 2)
Helix (Download from Wii online shop - its upper body dancing!)
EA Sports Active (gives much better workout than Wii Fit)
Samba De Amigo (I FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME *shakes maracas*)

For pure fun messing around with pals while sitting on your bum:
Mario Kart Wii (Ro is seriously good at this. The bitch.)
...and you know, i get bored with most other games
The most recent I bought was probably Wii Fit Plus, so I'm not up to date with newer releases.
People speak highly of Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, but I don't find them particularly engaging.

Ro used to bring home games she'd borrowed from pals, the only one I spent much time with was Guitar Hero (I think, I get it & Rock Band confused).
I played through the songs I liked and after an hour or two, I was getting pain in my wrists & I was bored. Those games are incredibly popular though.

Extras from the Wii store (most nostalgic):
Doctor Mario
Sonic The Hedgehog
Donkey Kong
Tetris Party (play Tetris by shaking your booty on the Wii Balance Board, among other things)

You must make a Mii & send it to the rest of us so you can join in the awesome fun depicted here

Oh yeah, I forgot it comes with on nunchuk, too.

I run with the wii fit plus every day for at least half an hour. I've lost 30 lbs since Feb only by running. Plus my butt is now totally awesome.

You'll use the balance board for wii fit plus step, yoga, strength and balance games and to weigh yourself and to do the fit tests. It's a crucial component for me personally, as I'm very goal-oriented and find that I'm treating getting fit as a game, due largely to the accountability and the stats and the feedback.

The nunchucks in wii fit plus are used for the very lame boxing game, and possibly a couple others. I really only do the running games so I don't need them.

That's what I'm looking for.

You're going to love it then. So what are your goals? What are you hoping to accomplish by getting the exercise-type games?

I want to be less fat?

Samba De Amigo (I FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME *shakes maracas*)

I have this game but have never played it. Well, not on the Wii - I knew a kid that had a Sega dreamcast and used to have samba parties. Perhaps tonight will be a samba night.

I recommend the Rayman Raving Rabbids games, especially the first one. Three friends of mine and I spent eight hours playing it the first day we got it. You can use the Wii balance board with a couple of the later games in the series - they all require nunchucks. Hilarity will ensue.

No love for the Lego games? Those are fantastic! Well, if you like casual games, never dying (only losing coins), shouting over pulling the other player to their death (if one player keeps moving right or left, the screen will follow, dragging player 2 along, even if it means into open pits =)

We loved Raving Rabbids 1, but 2 seemed like a sad re-hash. If you can get it on the cheap, go for it, but I wouldn't suggest paying full price.

I've had no success getting into WiiFit, but know folks who love it, including some friends who lived in snowy country, and that kept them active when everything was icy and cold.

As for batteries: we have a lot of recharables, as we got Rock Band and all those wireless guitars and whatnot, and there are maniac sessions of zombie killing. Plus our cat chewed through the sensor bar wire, so we had to get a 3rd party replacement (we could have gone DIY, but I was told we needed to replace it ASAP), and that thing CHEWS through batteries. Maybe they don't last as long as non-rechargeable batteries, but I think we've gotten more than our money's worth out of them. Eneloops can be pretty spiffy, if you want to have charged rechargables on hand, without the worry about their charge draining quickly or keeping them in the charger to trickle-charge forever.

Oh, the Lego games were AWESOME!!! I totally forgot about them. You need them all.

Ok? Good luck then?

List of Lego games for the Wii at GameRankings.com - not sure what Lego Rock Band adds to things, and the 2nd Indy game might be a bit repetitive if the Lego games aren't a huge fan of the game style, but that leaves you with 3 solid games. I'm looking forward to the Harry Potter game, mostly to replace the memories of the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Wingardium Leviosa. Wingardium Leviosa. Wingardium Leviosa. *sigh*

Some of my favorite games for the Wii:

Resident Evil 4 (Wii Edition)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (if you can find it)
Boom Blox! (Best party game ever.)
Williams Pinball Collection

I liked Super Mario Galaxy a lot, but it is not a particularly easy game. (Easier than Super Mario 64, though.)

18 holes of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will give you sore arms and shoulders. But again--not a particularly easy game. (I was used to getting 10 or 11 under par over 18 holes with previous console golf games, but I struggle to reach par with TW '10.)

And don't forget that the Wii is 100% backwards compatible with the Gamecube, which had lots and lots of good games.

Oh snap, I will have to ask the gf to bring my GameCube games down, then!
posted by Eideteker 10 June | 15:25
Don't forget the game cube controllers. I think some of the GC games require the use of the old controller, but they just plug into the side of the Wii. Even the wireless ones work. And you can take the memory card out of the game cube and stick it into the Wii if you wanted to go back to a saved game.

Wii Sports Resort is hell fun and you can certainly sweat trying to do the stick fighting.

Wii Fit Plus is a huge improvement over Wii Fit - they fixed a lot of the issues.

Also Mario Kart is fun (and tricky).

You're all awesome. I ended up just getting the Fit+ and Wii Sports Resort for now. I'll share Miis with you after Becca makes hers this weekend (since I know some of you will want hers as well!).
