Posting Flickr images to MetaChat: now with added smoothness. When posting an image from Flickr, you can now copy-and-paste their HTML as-is, without having to edit it.[More:]

Previously you had to remove the 'width', 'height' and 'alt' attributes from the 'img' tag to get it past MeCha's HTML filter. Now, MeCha won't complain about those.

So, if you're following BoringPostcards' guide to posting Flickr photos to MetaChat, you can now ignore step five.

Happy snapping!
Dude, that is GREAT news. Thank you so much!

And just in time for Photo Friday, too. :)

Yay! I'm always afraid that I'm doing it wrong and I'll post a borked picture.

Cool - I just posted some pics and I hesitated for a few minutes trying to remember which part to delete. As it turns out, I did it wrong based on the old way, but it still worked. Whooh whooh! Thanks.

That is FABulous. Despite having managed to do this a bunch of times, I still couldn't remember the process, and had to use BP's guide every single time. This makes it easier!

thank you chrismear, I failed at remembering how to do this Every. Single. Time., and didn't know BP had a guide. I guess I don't hang out here enough or something.

tl;dr: this is AWESOME! thanks!

So, I know there is a reason but I do not know it. What is wrong with "copy image location?"

Something about Flickr terms of service, but I do not understand why why would not like it, if it is OK to copy and paste the URL's.

Can someone please explain?

Thank you.

Thanks! I, too, would have to do it more than once each time because I could never remember exactly what part to delete.

Awesome! Thank you! It sounds like it was a headache to change, so thanks for doing it!

danf: So, I know there is a reason but I do not know it. What is wrong with "copy image location?"

The Flickr Community Guidelines ask that "pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr". I imagine that they do this to avoid becoming just another faceless image hosting service.

Copying-and-pasting the HTML that Flickr provides is the easiest way for most people to do this. It's also okay for you just make the img tag yourself, and add the link separately -- I do this myself sometimes. But only posting the image, with no link back to Flickr, means you are breaking their Community Guidelines, and we don't want to encourage people to do this.

This is precisely why I don't like flickr. I want a faceless image hosting service.

chococat: Was that while posting a new a thread, or leaving a comment? img tags aren't allowed in posts, but they should be working in comments.
posted by chrismear 07 June | 10:55
Oh, thanks, that's exactly what it was.
So what's the protocol for putting an image in a new post? Just as a link to the picture? Or as the first comment in the post?
posted by chococat 09 June | 10:38
You can do either one of those, chocoat- link to it, or make it a comment. (Pics can't be embedded in posts.)
