Posting Flickr photos to MetaChat: a how-to for newcomers, and a refresher course for longtime bunnies.[More:] This has given several folks a problem on recent Photo Fridays, so here's a quick tutorial. (NOTE: you can use the 'IMAGE' button to embed a photo if it's hosted somewhere like Photobucket, but Flickr's Terms of Service state that pics hosted there should link back to Flickr, which they'll do if you use this method to post them.)
Step one: on your photo's Flickr page, click "All Sizes"
≡ Click to see image ≡

Step two: choose your photo display size (usually Medium):
≡ Click to see image ≡

Step three: copy the code in the first box below your pic:
≡ Click to see image ≡

And the all-important step four: here on MetaChat, go to the comment window and IGNORE THE IMAGE BUTTON. You don't use it for posting pics this way. (Counter-intuitive, I know.)

STEP FIVE IS NOW OBSOLETE! Thank you chrismear for making this step unneccesary.
Step five: paste in the code from Flickr, and then DELETE the last three tags in the code, highlighted in yellow here:
≡ Click to see image ≡

If you leave those tags in, you'll be able to preview but will get an error when you post.

Step six: repeat this for as many pics as you'd like to add, then post your comment. This method also makes the pic link back to its original Flickr pagge, which is how it's supposed to work for Flickr's terms of service.

Step seven: Enjoy the fame and glory of having your photo posted on MetaChat.

Wait, so if you have your own photo you have to do the html and force it to go to flickr if you click on it or you're violating flickr's TOS?

So can the site be fixed to ignore the tags you have to remove to get pictures posted? Because having to do that every time you want to post a picture is a pain, and making it a pain passively encourages people to violate the terms of service.

I know seanyboy tried to fix it in the past, TPS, but we should definitely look at the problem again.

Yes, stewie, if a pic is posted on Flickr and you embed it somewhere else, it's supposed to link back to them or you're violating their TOS.

Due to the nature of things the site can't be changed to make it easier to post from flickr at this point in time sorry.

I always used the image button and pasted the URL from Flickr from number 2. on that screen. That's the no-no, that's what we're talking about, yeah?

Yeah.

See, I never knew that and now I feel bad. Thanks for the instructions!

If people want to post pics the second way, that's between them and Flickr. :)

Can we sidebar this post?

Is the trailing forward slash after the deleted tags important to retain?
posted by Kronos_to_Earth 30 April | 09:46
I believe so, Kronos.

Melismata, I added it under "Site News" (a little lower on the right-hand side of the page).

I should point out that it was seanyboy who originally figured all this out, back when Photo Fridays first became a regular thing.

Will posting my flicker photos to MetaChat make me popular with the ladies?

If this is still based on the same software when I was running it, then they simply need to enable those attributes on that tag.

Or to put it another way: the software doesn't just block tags, it blocks attributes too.

As a lady of MetaChat I would like to say yes, MonkeyButter, it will indeed make you popular with the ladies.

Depends on the pictures. Depends on the ladies.
