oh my god it's full of stars... and airplanes →[More:]

check out this nighttime timelapse video of Cotopaxi Volcano in Ecuador. Bonus catch, from 1:15 to about 1:40 (after the fog bank lifts) check out the flanks of the front ridge just below the crater - those climbers have got some BURLY headlamps!

I've probably watched this a dozen times already this morning, it's pretty nifty.

That is truly amazing. . .I want to go! (There are lots of places in South America that I would like to see. Unfortunately, they are thousands of miles between them.)

It really gives you the sense of being on a small ball spinning in the midst of a vast open space, with the nearest stars billions (trillions?) of miles away from us.

Kinda depressing to me when I think about the fact that I'd have to drive hours and hours to even see more than a handful of the brightest objects in the night sky.

Stars... airplanes.... and LLAMAS! I've taken a taxi up the side of Cotopaxi to about 12.5K feet. The plan was to walk up a bit further, but we were thwarted by lack of oxygen.

That's beautiful! Fantastic images of whirling constellations. I know that heavenly bodies rise and set like the sun (or at least appear to relative to the earth), but I can't remember ever seeing such a clear vision of it. Thanks for posting this.

Triode, I'm not sure if you're referring to the llamas of the climber's guides, wild llamas, or the fact that in native lore, the ancients apparently referred to the dark nebular cloud near the galactic core as "the Llama" for its shape. Either way, yes, llamas!
