"Big Hair & Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball And America In The Swinging ’70s" I'm going to HAVE to read this book. I became a fan of baseball as a kid in this era, but wasn't old enough to know (or "get") a lot of the crazy cultural backstory.
They had the WORST uniforms during that era, also. The pullover polyester unis? Not to mention the Astros, the Padres, or the White Sox.

Same here, BP! Thanks, I'm going to buy it too.

Some of my earliest memories (besides watching Nixon resign) were of my grandfather griping about the DH, and I couldn't understand the big deal since it made sense to me (if the pitcher can't hit, then...)

I also remember him noting, in a matter-of-fact sort of way, the number of "Negroes" on the teams. I think he just found it interesting because it was new and different for him, not necessarily a negative, but unusual enough to keep commenting on it. Like they would show a picture of a player and he would say "that's a fine-looking Negro man." Funny the things we remember.

The Big Hair & Plastic Grass FaceBook updates have been one of things I most look forward to on FB. I can't wait to get the book. It looks like contender to unseat the Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract as my favorite baseball book. I know Bill James is a stats guy, but the reason I love his book so much is that he also has a passion for the characters and oddities of baseball, which is what I dig so much too. Obviously Big Hair... is going to have that times ten.
