26 May 2010

This is a whining, sweating thread. The air conditioning is out at work, so it's climbed up to about 85F/29C in my office.[More:]

Meanwhile it's 79/26 outside. I have a fan sitting on my desk blowing straight onto my face, but even so I can't concentrate for shit.

Wah! Wah! WHAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
It's 93°F (34°C) outside. I went for a walk at lunchtime; everyone looked at me as if I had three heads. It felt WONDERFUL, and the warmth generated during that time should last for almost the rest of the afternoon, in this FREEZING office where the AC is turned up way too high.

This week, or rather, the last couple of days, have demonstrated to me that my new house, as it turns out, is NOT shaded enough to remain cool-ish in the heat of the summer. It's 33C today (with a humidex of 38, whatever that means) and I suspect I'll sleep poorly again tonight!

Looks like I'll get in the long line of duh-heads who wait for it to get really hot before looking into A/C. The new place does have forced air heating, so I can see what central air might cost. Imagine that...it's like I'm some sort of KING...central air!

The last two nights have reminded me of my early childhood in Windsor, ON, the most humid place I ever lived. Man...it was hot, and holy mother of god, the humidity...you could row a canoe in the air!

Must be superduper hot up north, hm?

It's definitely NOT cool, that's for sure. This is unseasonable though...we do get a couple hot weeks like this, but not in May typically. I think there's going to be LOTS of yellow lawns this year. The lakes are low too, due to lighter than usual snowfall this winter. So, I expect lots of firebans!

Anyone who is all sweaty can come hang out in my office in the stacks. (It's kept at a balmy 50 degrees F.)

I really wish we could set up some kind of temperature sharing co-op.

It's not too bad in my office this week. If/when the HVAC fails, as it usually does at some point, I go hide out in the server room. It's positively CHILLY in there.

OK, heading out to teach. Crossing fingers that the building where I'll be has working A/C.

In September of last year, we swapped rooms in our apartment: the tiny, dark bar/study became our cozy little bedroom cave, and the airy cool bedroom with the ceiling fan became our living room. That arrangement worked marvelously in the autumn, winter, and early spring.

But now it's 80F, and the cozy little bedroom is a little too cozy. Uh-oh. I am a little anxious about the summer.

Well it's 45c/113f outside out here! *drinks a liter of water in one gulp, decides 'eff it' pours the rest on his head*

wait, just sweaty whining or generic whining too? generically: oh god I am soooo tired of having the same types of problems for years on end

I am chilly in my office like Melismata, and when I went to pick up a salad for lunch it was in the 90s and I thought the salad leaves would all cook before I got to eat them. There are still plenty of people out and about on the NYC streets despite the heat.

I was out in the heat, ready to go home, and the damn bus must have been really early – I never saw it. I ended up standing on the sidewalk (nowhere to sit at this stop) for forty minutes until the next one came (at the expected time).

In Vegas, on the first day hot enough for AC, bus breakdowns hit their annual peak. Bus maintenance in LV is even worse than that in Atlanta.

Richat, an oscillating fan will make a huge difference to how you sleep, on a low setting, giving a cooling breeze across the bed.

I am sending big wafts of cool, damp, drizzly, high-50s, woods-and-ocean-scented Pacific NW air to all of you! (God, I love living here SO MUCH...)

The mister and I finally succumbed last year to buying a portable air conditioner for our bedroom. We don't get too much hot weather up here in BC, but when it's hot it's freakin' hot. We also have several regular portable fans that are used as needed.

Totally familiar with the "rowing canoe in the air" type humidity - Houston was horrific.

Ack. I know the onslaught of the heavy wet hot humid blanket is imminent here. Hope the AC gets fixed before then Stew!

I'm going to wear a tank top with a skirt and put a cardigan over it tomorrow. So if I need to, I'll just strip.

Am wearing aforementioned outfit. It's hotter in here than it was yesterday, even. I've been on the phone with maintenance raising a stink. I'll be raising a literal stink if they don't do something soon. If I need to, I'll use my armpit to punish them.

It's gonna be 62 degrees and raining here again today. The wettest coolest May anyone remembers. My tomatoes are just about to crawl back into the ground.

Stewie, lets go havesies on the weather. . .you can have some of ours and I'll take a tiny bit of your heat, OK?

Darned internet was broken last night! Thought it was the heat, turns out it was a fibre that got cut...ah well.

Yeah, I think I might pick up a couple oscillating fans. That's a great suggestion! The girls have one in their room. My ceiling fan helps, but I bet the oscillating fan would be better. Also, I played around with which windows to open last night, and managed to get some cross-breeze action happening. I kind of dislike leaving windows open on the main floor overnight, but between the open second-floor windows and open main-floor windows...the house was SO much cooler this morning. We'll see how it is this afternoon, now that it's all closed up for the heat!

Also got back to walking into work today. Man, that's hot out!
