I feel really good today, because I helped someone on AskMe.[More:]Someone was trying to remember the name of an obscure teenage chapter book, only had the vaguest of details, and I KNEW the answer, and now that person is happy. And I'm happy too. That is all. link

Durango Street was an eye-opener for me when I read it in 4th grade. It was published the year before, in 1965.

Hey, I saw that question and thought, "Ouch, that's not much information --- too bad." Good work!

That's such a good feeling. I saw a vague-book-description question recently and rushed to answer but several Mefites chimed in already. FOILED!

This has just taken a turn for the better, thanks to an as yet unnamed MeFite.

Yay Melismata!

Query: why is it called a chapter book?
posted by deborah 21 May | 01:24
Because it's divided into chapters (heh!) For young readers, they are the next step up from books where the story is largely told in illustrations (picture books). There's a transitional format between those two called early readers, where the story might be divided into short chapters but every page is illustrated, usually in color. Chapter books mostly use b/w illustrations and limit them to 1/chapter although there's a good bunch of them, such as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Capt Underpants series where the story is still illustration driven yet more text heavy than a picture book or early reader.
