Iron Man II buzz heats up over rumors Gwyneth Paltrow gets punched in the face I wouldn't have thought I would find this as funny and enjoyable as I did.
I can't watch the video, but I would DEFINITELY love to see this.

It's funny... watching this Onion video sort of brought to the surface an unconscious irritation I seem to have been feeling for Paltrow. I never thought I minded her before.
posted by Orange Swan 05 May | 11:07
If you should by any chance want more Paltrow-based mockery after your're through watching the video, the Fug Girls seem to like doing so, especially when they're talking about her website, GOOP.

Ugh, GOOP. Who does she think she is? Really, I want answers. I demand she show up here and explain to me why she thinks she gets to tell all of us how to live.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 05 May | 11:29
I figure she's lived a life of such privilege that she just has no understanding whatsoever of what life is like for even average people in Western society, and further that she credits herself with a much higher proportion of her accomplishments than is really warranted.

Ergo, in her mind, she has all the answers and much to teach us.

TPS, I think she thinks she's exactly what she is, the incredibly beautiful daughter of two rich, famous talented people, who lives an incredibly charmed life because she's beautiful and the daughter of two rich famous talented people. She just doesn't know that the good things of her life are an accident and not deserved, in the sense that Gwenyth Paltrow qua Gwenyth Paltrow deserves all those good things and naturally belongs among them. Her access to only good expensive and charmed things is more than an invisible backpack and GOOP really makes it seem she has no idea the unfairness and singularity of the hand life dealt her.

or what Orange Swan said much more simply.

Right, and in fairness to GP I'm sure if I were in her (expensive and designer but somehow usually damn ugly) shoes I'd be much more full of myself than she is.
posted by Orange Swan 05 May | 11:44
I like to think that I'd be humble enough to realize that I don't know anything. But who am I kidding, I'd probably start POOP (Pink version of GOOP).

Is there an example of a mega-famous star to "gets" it? Once you get into that bubble of wealth and fame and affordable beauty, is it possible to hold onto a notion of where you came from? (Unless you were bred and born within that bubble, as Paltrow was.)

OMG she's helping me with wine pairings!!!!

I take it all back!!!

Sarah Jessica Parker seems pretty down-to-earth in interviews.

She's the GOOP that holds us all together.

I don't get why she's so loathed. She's like a baby Martha Stewart but with more delusions of grandeur, but still in all, relatively harmless.

I figure if you were born and bred within the bubble, you probably have zero chance of ever really getting it. As for the others who came from modest beginnings, I think if they want to keep their feet on the ground they have to really work at doing that, by surrounding themselves with real friends and family who will treat them like an equal instead of sychophants, and by living as normal a life as possible, which for one thing means doing at least some of their own household chores. Meryl Streep, who does seem like a very grounded person, has said you don't get spoiled if you do your own ironing. Micheal J. Fox wrote in his first memoir about his struggles with this, about how when you're famous and successful no one ever says no to you and it can really go to your head. He credits his family and his wife with cutting him down to size (I shouldn't make that comment about the dimunitive Fox but I will) when he needs it.

Sarah Jessica Parker seems pretty down-to-earth in interviews.

Is she? I have to admit I've never read any interviews with her, but she's always struck me as someone who would be rather spoiled and unpleasant in person, the kind of person who would chastise anyone who expected her tolerate the slightest inconvenience.

By all accounts I've heard/read, Sandra Bullock is pretty down to earth.

I don't loathe her. I have loved some of her performances is movies.

But the site was a bit off-putting to me.

Except that Martha Stewart is a "business woman" who works like crazy. Even though actresses do work pretty hard, most people don't think of it as being very hard, so it seems like Gwyneth does nothing.

Yep, Sandra Bullock seems likes she actually groks it - and dammit she's a handsome woman. My mom can't stand Meryl Streep for her terrible accent in "out of africa", but she seems very 'normal' if you will, for someone who has had such a long career in Hollywood. Diane Keaton too.

On the other side of the sacle, there's Joaquin Phoenix. What the heck happened there?

... meh, I might as well fess up: I frickin' love Sandra Bullock. Yes, I even allow her stupid movies like agent-whatsit-beautyqueen. Cuza, dammit she's a handsome woman. I could look at her face for a year and not get bored. ANd she said crazy shit in interviews early on in her career like (paraphrasing): "I've made so much money from movies, I mean, who needs this kind of money? It's only right that I give it back to others who want to create too" - and presto, she's producing small indie films. Girlfriend. You good.

Paul Newman seemed to be a pretty stand-up guy. At least I really admire what he did with Newman's Own, a very clever idea for maintaining a charity.

dabitch, I agree. I only wish she had better taste in men, for her sake.

Gwyneth wouldn't be in my list of the most talented actresses working, but she has a very respectable resume of work and she more than holds her own in any movies I've seen her in. (No, I have not seen The Pallbearer.) She would have had to log some very long hours on all those movie sets in order to achieve what she has. And I don't get the impression anyone who works directly with her dislikes her or finds her difficult to work with.

So no, she's not loathsome, just a little clueless. I do think some of the negative feedback from GOOP should have gotten through to her, but otherwise I think she's probably got a naturally good disposition and means well and it's not really fair to blame her for not understanding the world a little better. I honestly think most people with her background and advantages would not handle it as well.

Tori Spelling, now, would be my idea of a Hollywood spawn who is completely useless and freeloading and should just GO AWAY to spare us all the aggravation of having to see or listen to her.

I have to disagree with you there. My understanding is she inherited just about nothing and has to work, so she's not a freeloader. I don't think she's a gifted actress, but I'm not surprised that that's the direction she went, considering her father's career.

She must have made lots of money on Beverly Hills 90210 and blew it all. She's made quite a lot since by ordinary person standards. If she had been at all responsible with that money, she wouldn't have to work at all. And in any case, she could always step back from the entertainment business and say to herself, "Hey. I can't act. I should go do something else for a living, something worthwhile that I'm good at, rather than be some bottom feeder C-list celebrity for my entire working life."

But she'll never do that because she's extremely spoiled and probably really thinks she is talented and deserves to live like a princess.

That is really hard to do once you're well-known and recognized. It's kind of difficult to be taken seriously as a real estate agent or a store manager or whatever when you're constantly getting gawked at or having your time wasted by fans or people who want to sell your autographed photo.

I'm not sure why all the hate for Tori. I feel sorry for her. She's estranged from her mother and her father is dead. I've watched her reality show and she seems pretty down to earth to me, considering the environment in which she was raised (and in which she had no say).

All right, I've done some Tori Spelling-related googling and I think I have been somewhat too harsh.

I stand by my opinion that she's a crap actress, but she has shown some entrepreneurial ability. She has launched a line of jewelry and a line of children's clothing that she purportedly designed (I'm sure she had help from others with more expertise than her) and while they're not wonderful examples of design and I wouldn't buy them, they aren't bad either. They look quite wearable, really.

I don't know how they're doing sales-wise but I do know celebrity merchandising lines don't last unless they've got intrinsic merit. And she wrote a book that appeared on the NY Times bestseller list. Don't know how good it was or how much of it she actually wrote or how much work it needed from its editors, but that shows some initiative.

And her mother seems to have been at least 50% responsible for the problems between the two of them. Frankly, she sounds like a rather awful person with a compulsive shopping problem who therefore wasn't a good role model for her daughter.

Tori does seem to be terrible with money, and it is rather grating that she cries poor when she's made a LOT. But I guess when you grow up on a $150 million dollar estate and can do whatever you want, and then suddenly as an adult are kicked off the gravy train and have to live within your means even if they are generous means by anyone else's standards, you probably will have trouble learning to budget and to practice self-discipline so as to be able to do so.

Yes. And you have to admit that she's always been pretty hard-working, even when she didn't have to be.

Clooney seems to get it.

Also, Jon Hamm seems like a great guy too. He was buddies with a bunch of comedians in the LA scene before Mad Men. Now he's done all their podcasts--Jimmy Pardo's Never Not Funny (several times), Doug Benson's I Love Movies, Chris Fairbank's The Nerdist. Probably more that I don't remember or listen to. He will plug Mad Men or his new movies, but I think he just likes an excuse to hang out with his comedian buddies.
