What are some good movies for a Cinco de Mayo movie night? I rented Three Amigos! but I heard it's not so great. Any other similar suggestions? That is, Mexican-themed comedies available on NetFlix? Non-comedies are okay, I guess.
Quinceañera is a sweet little movie. It has it's moments of angst and tragedy (it's about a 15 year old girl), but with a warm and happy ending.

Me ecantan estas películas Mexicanas...
Amores Perros
Y Tu Mamá También
El crimen del padre Amaro

For an American movie with a Mexican bent try out:
Once upon a time in Mexico
El Matador

Nacho Libre is terrible, but I still enjoyed it (I'm a sucker for anything to do with luchadores. Yay for Mexican wrestling!!)

oh somehow I glossed over the comedy preference.

Elvis made "Fun in Acapulco", which might not be GOOD, but might be fun (as the title suggests of course! Mind you I doubt much of it was actually filmed in Mexico.

Desperado is a fun flick, though, not much of a comedy. There's also The Magnificent Seven, which, while not a comedy, is dated enough now that it's almost funny at times!

El Mariachi - not a comedy - but WOW.

Seconding Quinceañera.

And as for Three Amigos not being good, the person who told you this is obviously the son of a motherless goat!

Jefe: We have many beautiful piñatas for your birthday celebration, each one filled with little surprises!
El Guapo: How many piñatas?
Jefe: Many piñatas, many!
El Guapo: Jefe, would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?
Jefe: A what?
El Guapo: A plethora.
Jefe: Oh yes, El Guapo. You have a plethora.
El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?
Jefe: Why, El Guapo?
El Guapo: Well, you just told me that I had a plethora, and I would just like to know if you know what it means to have a plethora. I would not like to think that someone would tell someone else he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.
Jefe: El Guapo, I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education, but could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

I could be reliably entertained by The Three Amigos.

The obvious relevant film would be Juarez (1939), with Paul Muni! and Bette Davis! But I have no idea how easy it would be to find a copy.

Comedy, but women focused - Real Women Have Curves (It's good)

Action - Desperado. If the movie isn't the party focus, you could play the Mariachi Trilogy, I guess, in the background.

Art House- Santa Sangre (89) - anyone else ever seen this strange gem? What did you think of it. OMG Elephant Funeral. OUT there. I don't know how it's aged, but I saw it several times, and some film geeks hold a place for it in their hearts. Really not a comedy.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is also quite good, but as mentioned, not a comedy.

Wasn't Pan's Labyrinth done by a Mexican Director, along with a few other arty ones that year? Not what you are looking for, but I wanted say Mexican cinema is really a treasure trove.
