Thursday 3-point update of happiness (or not, depending on each of you) [More:]

1. Woke up on the right side of the bed this morning and am just thrilled to be alive. Isn't that a great feeling when it happens?

2. Am wearing a new dress I got at Goodwill yesterday for $4.59. It fits perfectly, is all cotton, even the lining, and is stylish, too. <3

3. Thursdays are my Friday, because I do four 10-hour days. It's going to be gorgeous this weekend, with temps dropping to reasonable levels and full sun on Saturday and Sunday. Tonight and tomorrow we'll get rain to clear away our crazy pollen and rejuvenate my garden. Speaking of which, my radishes are ready for the eating, along with arugula and Red Russian kale. The lettuce looks gorgeous, and I just learned an awesome tip for onions. I'm hardening off some tomato starts, which I almost killed yesterday from forgetting to water them. They came back strong as soon as I rescued them, and I'll be ready to plant them in a couple of weeks, along with other seedlings I have or will have. I had my performance evaluation at work last week, and it was stunningly awesome. I'm loving the new household member, and we've been out exploring almost every day. I found a silver necklace I'd forgotten about in a drawer at work this morning. Federal funding for GOOD sex ed has been released, and even though we won't be applying for it (too small of an organization to really have the capacity), we may benefit indirectly by partnering with a bigger agency. (Unlikely, but a girl can dream.) I ran into chewie and Mrs. chewie at Whole Foods this morning, as I occasionally do, and that also helped get me off on the right foot this morning.

Like I said, I'm in a fantastic place today, and I hope that some of the extra goodness in my life spreads to those around me, both near and far.

How're y'all?

xxoo stew

1. I have given up dating again. I hate it. I'm too old for it. Maybe I'll get more cats.

2. I have planted peas and lettuce and spinach in my garden.

3. My mother actually called me. And nobody had died or anything. Amazing.

1. Well, I started seeing this guy and then he started pestering me to read his unpublished novel and I was all like, no, no, not yet, and then he brought it over anyway saying "You must read this, it is all that I am, it means everything to me" and suchlike various and sundry words meaning that he was totally bound up in this thing and finally I said, OK, I will read it. . . .. . . . . and I read it and it sucked. So I think that brief relationship has probably come to an untimely end.

2. Last day at work is next Wednesday. Cow-orkers are treating me like Dead Woman Walking. It's eerie around here - kind of like being in a movie that's a strange and unnatural mash up of a 1970s B level ghost movie and a 1940s office farce.

3. Think I blew the interview I had yesterday even though I realized by the end of it that I actually would enjoy and wanted the job.

1. Grilled outside last night - the weather was really nice.
2. My Mom gave me a package of Peeps - I really don't like them. Except, I found a new use for them - they make fabulous marshmallows when toasted over the remaining hot coals. Mmmm - toasty Peeps!!!
3. I finished tax paperwork 30 minutes ago. Just have to get it in the mail. whew.
posted by mightshould 08 April | 08:54
I was thinking of inventing Peeps Smores this year, too!

1. Not one student showed up on time to my 9 am class even though I got up at 6 am in order to arrive on campus on time.

2. My cat curled up next to me while I had morning tea. This is the most affectionate she's been in a while.

3. Need to get my phone fixed today as something is wrong with the speakers (ie I can't hear ANYTHING AT ALL), but considering my mood I don't think I can handle the Verizon Wireless store. I would gladly pay someone to do it for me.
posted by miss-lapin 08 April | 09:22
1. My nails are growing again! Hooray!

2. Therefore, going to get a long-overdue manicure and pedicure. Mmmmm.

3. Taking tomorrow off purportedly to catch up on various crud (oil change for truck, etc.), but just realized that one day probably won't be enough, oh well.

Me too, JanetLand. Bleah.

1. Working from home this morning and then I have the whole afternoon off! I'm gonna read books on the Kindle and relax!

2. Achoo. Damn you, pollen.

3. Kitty wants to play fetch, gotta go.

1. So stuffy at work. Who difficult is it to turn down the heat when the weather warms up?! This makes Specklet feel stabby. See also: menstrual cramps.

2. Yay Friday tomorrow! Yay weekend! And that lucky bastard TheDonF's last day is tomorrow and he ain't gotta go to work no more.

3. Please send good thoughts for visa processing! Smooth and quick, that's what we want.
posted by Specklet 08 April | 10:18
1. Bad tooth. Bad back. Bad mood. Happily, that last one can be fixed with caffeine, and by sending visa-quickening thoughts to Specklet!

2. Making small steps to clean out the closets, which means getting rid of some clothing and altering some little-worn pieces to make new garments. Snip, stitch, and voila: I have a brand-new scoopneck top and knee-length skirt to wear today.

3. I conquered my stupid crap espresso machine, and can now make decent foamed milk. Yay!

Yeesh, mgl, that "here, read this, it's my soul" thing is a brutal position to be put into. Here's hoping it works out for the best, whatever the best turns out to be.

1. Have been totally blindsided by a crush. First big one since I met mr alto 7 years ago. I haven't acted on it, and it's just brain drugs and they'll wear off, but this has knocked me sideways. Luckily I won't be seeing Object of Crush too often in future as he lives some distance away.

2. Failing to concentrate despite looming deadline (see 1)

3. Have been exercising more lately. This + nice weather gives me some optimism.

1 Working part-time at an animal hospital has many benefits. The experience is invaluable, I'll get some very strong rec letters, and it will surely play a vital role in my application to vet school. It's also extremely nice to be able to call your boss and have him meet you at 8:45 in the evening to give your dog an anti-nausea injection.

2. In my hurry to get her taken care of, I accidentally shut the car door on the tip of her tail. I feel fucking terrible about that. The poor thing is not happy.

3. Bought a plane ticket to visit my sister in Florida for a few days next month. I'm a pretty energetic person, but working six days a week while pulling A's in 9 hours of Science! classes has worn me the hell out. I can't wait to relax on the beach and do nothing for a little while. Plus, it looks likely that I'll get to grab a pint with BoringPostcards during my long layover in Atlanta, which would be very, very cool.

1) I went to the physical terrorist yesterday for a nagging chronic tight shoulder / neck issue that turned out to be REALLY SIMPLE to solve. Like, a 20 minute session of holyshitOW rolfing and suddenly I feel completely rejuvenated.

2) This has translated to AMAZING SLEEP last night and ZOMGENERGY!!! today, so yay! for that! I was so chipper and perky and organised this morning that the mister was like o_O holy fuck what is UP with you??!! and I was like YAYAYAYAY!!!! (^-^)

yea I know, I mean seriously WTF?! exuberant shinyhappy people in the AM usually make me feel homicidally stabby, so now I have all this cognitive dissonance going on too

3) Today is mr. lfr's birthday, and we're meeting some friends at a local mexican joint for tacos and margs after work. I say again: YAAAAAY!!!!

Man, I wish I could share in Stew's happiness.
1. The yellow pollen scourge has basically sidelined my husband, so I am responsible for every walk with the dog these days, which is a
2. pain, because I have been absolutely exhausted, for no good reason, that is,
3. until I found out that I am severely iron-deficient anemic, and as a result, I found out today that I am going to have a hysterectomy.
3.a Drinking later.

1. Last summer, a bunch of wine got left in my wine fridge for a couple of weeks, and the fridge wasn't on. Eventually, I turned on the fridge, but by then it had gone through 100 degree heat for a prolonged period of time. So, the other night, I finally got around to opening each bottle, bottle by bottle to see if the wine had turned.

2001 Duckhorn Merlot. Bad.
2003 Provenance Merlot. Bad.
2004 Provenance Rutherford Cabernet. Bad.
2005 Provenance Rutherford Cabernet x 2. Bad.
2005 Sanford Pinot Noir. Bad (heartbreaking!)
2005 Provenance Carneros Cabernet. GOOD!! (Even better through the Vinturi)

I drank most of that bottle of 2005 Provenance Carneros Cabernet Savignon.

2. I still have my health.

3. And I still have my job.

1. I went skiing last weekend, with Guy, at his parents' place, and we got fresh snow every day, but now it's melting, so he plans to FINALLY come home possibly even before the lifts close for the season (in two weeks). This is only about the 6th or 7th time I've been skiing and I love it SO MUCH. I'm really happy for Guy that he was able to take the whole winter off and ski; really happy that I was able to make so many trips out there myself; and REALLY DAMN HAPPY that he's coming home.

2. My first big research project at the new job launches phase 1 of the data collection today and my head is about to explode. But the funder is already impressed enough to want to fund us in multi-year increments next time.

3. I can see Lake Michigan from my desk (through a window down the hallway) and it is a glorious day.

1) While I do have some stuff to say, I can't seem to write anything up in a clear manner.
2) Some of it is kinda awesome.
3) Other aspects of same are kinda NOT.

So, yeah, I'll just post to share my confusion, and to say, hope bad things get better! And, of course, that Mr. & Mrs Specklet-TheDonF have the smoothest of sailings with that whole Visa thing!

1. I went to my first mindfulness meditation group session yesterday after learning about it and doing it on my own for the past two weeks, and although the jury's still out on whether this is going to become a lifelong thing, I can definitely see the potential for this to be a good thing in my life.

2. As a result of all this meditation stuff, I am interesting in learning more about Buddhism. But I have a big stack of books that I need to get through first.

3. Second session with a personal trainer tomorrow. I'm nervous because my legs hurt for almost a week after the first one, and I didn't even do that much because I had to stop due to faintiness from low blood sugar.

1. Awesome karaoke last night with TPS, gaspode and dame (and TPS's sister). 'Pode and I discovered that we are really, really good at performing dramatic narrative songs involving rejection, murder and revenge.

2. Diane arrives today - yaaay! She nearly died last year, and I really thought we were going to lose her. She is so much better now - still not 100% restored to health but way better than a year ago.

3. Bought shoes today - I love shoe shopping in the States, there's none of that "oh we don't do half sizes, there's no demand" that I always get in the UK.

Joining JanetLand and melismata. Will adopt 37 new cats when I get home.

Heh, I don't know if "roast beast" was intentional or a typo, but I love it either way.

Coya has (well, had) the cutest little tuft of white fur at the tip of her tail (you can see it really well in this picture). I'm going to be really sad if it doesn't grow back.

And the guilt. Oh my lord, the guilt. If she weren't so damned spoiled already, well, you can figure out the rest.

1. Birds are starting to migrate through Chicago, so birdwatching is about to get exciting.

2. Bought a fleece jacket on clearance. I love the end of the season.

3. Bought a pair of rain boots, finally! I've wanted some for a few years now. Soon I will be able to walk in hermetically sealed comfort.

Went to the gay bar with Ronnie last night and they had a fetish night of some sort on, poor Ronnie jumped two feet in the air. LOL! Then we went to the other gay bar and they had one pound drink night so there were about a million people there.

ELECTION. Please to be nice to the poor sods knocking on your door!

WOOOO soon I will be DONE with all this!

1. I finally have the place to myself again. My mom was a stellar guest, but the place is too small for more than a few days without collisions.

2. Ridiculously excited about starting Totally Impractical Grad School in July.

3. A tiny bit tree-sniffly, but it's very very mild case.

*whuffles for all*

1. The upholsterer dude was an hour late for my appointment today and the price to get all 3 pieces redone is almost double what had been budgeted (my folks are paying for this because it's originally their furniture) but I am so fucking excited for my beautiful fabric even thought my mother hates it because it's too dark and pops hates it because it's flocked.

2. My dance teacher sent an email about opening a class on Sundays (but not through the county) and so I'm thinking of doing 2 classes a week and maybe just saving my gym membership money. (Or just squeezing time for gymness into my schedule, I haven't decided yet.) I've decided to start focusing on a new DVD (that I haven't really been paying attention to) since I'm kinda bored with DDD and AS at the moment.

3. It's the weekend and I have almost finished all my assignments for the semester and it's pouring rain out right now which is awesome since it's been damn near 90F for the past few days and I plan on doing my quarterly super deep cleaning tomorrow and I'm going to take some drugs and get my back to unclench and spend lots of time in bed reading.

1. The cat is bathing herself on my lap, and she has managed to turn her ear inside out. Which makes me happy, especially when she tries to look all serious about it.

2. I have been unexpectedly productive all week. I keep getting things done in much less time than expected, in weird little pockets of time that I wasn't expecting to have. It's rather nice.

3. I feel like I've hit my stride as a therapist. I've been getting better at more-or-less gently confronting clients in a way that leads to actual discussion of actual issues. It's pretty cool, even if some of the actual issues that come up are rather heavy.
