My boyfriend was tagged for the scanner last time we flew together. We'd already agreed beforehand we'd both decline if asked choosing instead the pat down, so when they walked him to the pat-down area instead they kept silently motioning for him to walk through the scanner but because they weren't saying anything it seemed like they were insisting he get in the scanner and he kept saying "No!" and they just kept waving more and more dramatically, still not saying anything, and we kept glancing at each other like "What? What do they want you to do?!" Until finally the guy said to just walk through it to get to the pat-down area and I looked at my boyfriend like "Is this a good idea?" His look said he didn't know but was resigned. As he walked through the scanner I was having a big talk with myself, "You're paranoid, they won't do anything for the couple seconds he's in it. The machine doesn't even look on. Do you know what on even looks like? No, but still, it's paranoid to even be thinking this."
Didn't it ever occur to them that the yahoos who do the screening might try this?
Of course it did. But there was political and financial gain to be made from the machines. And it's not like they give a shit about airplane passengers.
It's not like the scanners accomplish that much, security-wise. Here is a video (shown on German TV) of bomb materials being smuggled through a full body scanner.

In the UK we don't have that option. But we can choose to go to an airport they're not installed at, since the two airports that have them have been well publicised by the politicians (completely undermining the point of having them).
