Fascinating heater bees! They're hot hot hot! Hubba hubba![More:]

These special toasty bees act as heating units, and are so hot that scientists are baffled as to why they don't cook themselves! And the previously undesireable empty cells turn out to be vital for a hive's health: the heater bees snuggle into a vacant hive near the baby bees to transmit heat to them. The temperature that a baby bee is kept determines whether they will be a forager bee or a housekeeping bee.

I saw infrared film of these intriguing creatures on a show called Richard Hammond's Invisible World, on BBC One. The heater bees showed up as golden glowing beings amongst their cool blue compatriots.

Man, I love bees. Here's a picture of a bee on a flower!
Bees fascinate me too. Thanks for the article, Speck!

They snuggle into a vacant CELL, not a vacant hive, but you probably figured that out.

Not only the bees are fascinating, there's a sidebar link to a gallery of kingfishers, my favorite bird.
