18 March 2010

The 2010 Tournament of Books closed its opening round today with an upset victory for Victor LaValle's Big Machine. If this underseeded scrapper can fend off The Book of Night Women and impress celebrity judge Andrew W.K., it may have a shot at the title...
Normally I follow the Tournament of Books like a rabid Duke fan does the actual tournament, but I was really underwhelmed with the book choices this year. I mean, of all the amazing graphic novels this year, the one they selected was Logicomix? Which sucks? Where's Asterios Polyp? Where are the fun, offbeat contenders like last year's Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks? I mean, Gate at the Stairs was good and The Help is entertaining enough, but I didn't wholly love any of these books (and normally there are a couple I can really root for).

Sorry to rant--I just really disliked this year's contenders.
