My dad lives in a cabin out in the woods, and there is an abundance of wildlife. He made friends with the chipmunk that lives under the cabin to the extent that the chipmunk would come when he called and sit in his hand to eat sunflower seeds. (OMG cute!) One morning my dad forgot to bring seeds at the appointed time. Sitting in his favourite chair, he caught some movement out of the corner of his eye. The door was open, and the chipmunk had come inside, found the bag of seeds and was helping himself!
He tried to befriend the squirrels as well, but being squirrels, they would nip his hands and then pee on the deck. He left seeds out for them for a while, but then got tired of their effluvia and stopped leaving them food. He told one squirrel: "No more. No more seeds. Seeds all gone." and showed his empty hands.
The next morning, on the front step, he found a tidy little pile of seeds and dried grass. My dad and I agree that the squirrel understood the sentiment of "no more seeds" and thought he'd help out with the shortage!
The squirrels eventually gave up looking for food on the deck, but later that year there was a bad ice storm which made squirrel grub pretty hard to find. My dad was hanging out in front of the wood stove when all of a sudden there was wild chittering outside. The squirrel was jumping up and down, popping in and out of sight, in front of a window. My dad figured the squirrel remembered him as the seed guy and figured he come calling since everything was iced over. My dad gave him a handful of seeds.
