Interesting article. Kinda makes sense that people will support whatever system that is in place if it progresses them towards more income and modernization.

It's odd to me that the article assumes middle-class people have been liberal. Hippies in the 60s popularized the term "bourgeois" and it meant "middle class," "conservative," and "small minded."

So yeah, no shit people who don't care about politics and have a bit of money are conservative. Selfishness is a universal trait.

My reaction is the same as BP's. Although I think they're less conservative than simply reactionary.

The more fragile their economic gains, I suspect, the more skeptically they'll look on liberalization, which seemingly threatens to sweep it all away.
