Too embarassingly clueless to post on askme filter →[More:]What is a docx file and why can't I open it? All the sudden every time someone sends me a Word file, it's got a docx suffix and I can't open it. I presume this has something to do with needing a newer version of Word?

Convert a docx file to doc. Does this help? I've never had to use it. Tell your friends to stop with the "open" MS xml format.

MSFT has a compatibility pack too.

Word 2007 is a HUGE improvement, BTW.

Feh! I hate Office 2007. Even after years of using it, I still can't find anything. Bring back the menus.

Me too! My computer at work is still on 2003, and I am going to hold on until the bitter end. My boss, however, has 2007, so when she asks me how to do something, I have to research and instruct her blind.

It uses a ribbon interface, sort of a combined menu/toolbar thingy.

another vote for Feh! I hate Office 2007. Menus use words; words are good; I like words. Ribbon uses pictures, and hides functionality. Bad ribbon; do not want.

Download the compatibility pack, and you can read .docx files.

Yeah, the free Microsoft compatibility pack is better than the docx to doc converter. And it comes with one of my new favorite fonts, Calibri!

I have no preference for Word 2007 to Word 2003. I mean, I was partial WordPerfect 5.1 until about 1999 (Feh! Stupid Word 6.0!), but since then I kind of go with the flow.

I clicked on that and thought, hey I like Calibri too! Then I saw it's in the same group as my favourite, Trebuchet. Ha!
