I have noticed that most of these "new user" threads consist of us oldsters trying to look witty (I am among the guilty here).

But few of the new users ever pipe up in these threads. Is it because the rest of us are just so side-splittingly fucking funny that it intimidates the new people? Should be try to less dazzlingly amusing?

danf, I have two theories - either new members are not on metachat nearly as much as you (and I) are and so might miss the welcomes, or they are having a Bunny? WTH? moment.

Either response is perfectly sensible.

I signed up after Miko posted about Photo Friday in Metatalk.

I live in the (American) South, I'm an artist and antiques dealer (although I used to be a UI Designer/Manager), and right now I'm eating Chee*tos and watching curling. I was once stranded on a dessert island. I know a little about a lot of things, but wish I knew a lot about little things. I am waiting for a furniture delivery and pricing recent acquisitions for resale. I've been on Metafilter forever, but tend to be mostly in lurk mode, although being my own boss has afforded me more time to say the occasional thing.

I kinda like the borderline chatfilter Askmes (i.e. the mixtape posts), and Metachat seemed to have the same sort of sensibility in a less purpose-driven situation, so I signed up.

I was once stranded on a dessert island.

I visited there once. The tiramisu was to die for, but I found the chocolate mousse to be a little chalky.

I think a whuffle is a sort of breathy little belly rub that you perform with your face. You know, like when a cute little baby is lying on its back and you just can't help but WHUFFLE!

Hi! I came over from metafilter, but I've been reading over here for a bit. Miko's post gave me that little extra boost I needed to sign up :) Plus y'all are hilarious, witty, sweet, gorgeous, and awesome so why wouldn't I want to hang out here?

I'm currently in Americorps, working at an awesome museum. I'm not very witty, but I do have good recipes to share. And I had a crazy dream last night where there was a snake in my bed- I threw all the covers off, my cat looked at me like I was insane, and I told him, "Oh, I'll have to find that snake in the morning. I'm too tired right now." and fell back asleep. I also like to look at people's photos, and I hope to share some of my own soon :)
