Ask MeCha. . . Yesterday I went, for the first time in years, to a chiropractor.[More:]
My lower back just keeps not getting better, and a massage did not help much, so I chose the next larger bullet.

He did the rubber hammer test of my reflexes, and then pressed hard on the top of my head and asked if it hurt anywhere.

My legs and ankles jumped for the hammer, and nothing hurt when he pressed on my head. This lead him to conclude that I have no disk problems.

This seems borderline bogus to me, but I am not sure. Has anyone been tested like that for back probs?
I haven't had that test, no.

I will say (perhaps again, forgive me if this is a repeat) that when I started going to my current chiro, I figured I'd give it a couple months, because her process struck me as clearly pointless. But, she came highly recommended, so...like I say, I gave it a month or two, and the results convinced me.

She uses the "activator method" which is a little different and easier going than the more common manual manipulations.

So, I dunno...maybe give it a bit of time and see if your back gives you some feedback?

The chiro I went to also uses that method, followed by a few minutes of electric current that felt like a strong hot jub jet.

Did you get any benefits from it? It was just 24 hours ago for me so the jury is still out.

I definitely feel like my back responds positively to the treatment. I have sort of classic lower back pain. I can end up rather crooked when spasms hit, and I find that if I pay attention, and go when it starts to feel fatigued, I can normally avoid the spasms.

Also, when spasms do hit, this approach seems to garner results fairly quickly.

Yes, I have.

Chiropractic is, as richat said, one of those things that you may need to give some time to settle in. If the techniques he's using don't work, change chiropractors. (Disc problems aren't the only thing that cause back pain.)

My best results for dealing with back troubles have been from doing strength training for stomach and back muscles, and also working on flexibility. I've had very mixed results from chiropractors.
