The ballbearing rolls down the shoot and clicks the toaster lever, the toast flies up and triggers the [etc.]... Help me out: What's the name of the fellow who did all these classic devices that filtered into cartoons and such?

In the UK, it was Heath Robinson. So much so that the name has become an adjective (as in, "it's a bit Heath Robinson, isn't it?").
