I just did a phone interview! I thought I did well, despite my Phone Fear. Having a big black Bakelite rotary phone helps, makes me feel like I'm Frank O'Hara or sumfing.
good luck!

Those old-school phones are great for when you want to hang up on someone in an angry humph... Very cathartic and viscerally satisfying.

Don't hang up on potential employers, though!

I'm with you on the phone thing. I've got my Western Electric Model 500 right here at hand, ready to ride out the apocalypse blissfully free of Caller ID.

Good luck, and congratulations on getting through it! From someone who also hates phones and has been on the interviewer end of the phone interview lately, I can at least offer that it's not necessarily any more comfortable or less awkward for the interviewer. And especially on the phone (at least for me), the I'm-making-you-nervous-and-your-nervousness-is-making-me-nervous dynamic can take over really easy.

Oh, and I'm so jealous of your retro phone. If I knew the interviewee was talking via such a phone, I'd instantly recommend him or her for an in-person interview, regardless of how the phone interview went.

My daddy worked for Western Electric, so I wouldn't be without one of those old phones. It's the only phone in the house that rings, because modern phones sound terrible.

Good luck Whelk!

Bakelite rocks. My antique razor's handle is Bakelite. French artist and comic creator Jean (Moebius) Giraud had a character in his "Airtight Garage" strip called "the Bakelite". I always pronounced it "BACK-uh-lite" and chuckled.
