And it's strange how the whole dogs as pets/dogs as food split hits me. Logically, I know that there's not much of a difference between someone eating a dog and someone eating, say, cow (the way I do whenever I have a burger). But there's something so upsetting emotionally about the thought of someone eating a dog- particularly if they're clubbing it to death in the street first.

It's definitely the clubbing that gets to me. Whatever your cultural background, not being intentionally cruel to animals seems like a pretty reasonable standard.

Speaking of cows as food and not being cruel, did anyone see the Temple Grandin movie on HBO? It may still be available on demand.

The pictures don't have any dogs being clubbed, but there are a couple that i couldn't look at.

The inevitable dog-eating jokes would be a trial, but this would make a good FPP, I think.
