What do you do with/for a sneezy cat? →[More:]

Yes, I will talk to my vet, but she doesn't go on duty until 6 tonight, so I have a long wait and would like some info before I go crazy with worry.

Zuzu has been on prednisone for a week for an allergic reaction to flea bites. The steroids have cured her itching -- thank the cat gods! -- but now I think she's catching a cold. The vet mentioned that the prednisone suppresses the immune system (I have to wait a month for her vaccinations), and now Zuzu is a little ball of kitten sneezes.

It might also be a flare-up of feline herpes. Her littermates had herpes-related upper respiratory infections at about 6 weeks, but Zuzu never got the URI. She does, however, have a consistently weepy eye as a result. So, it might be that instead of a cold.

I guess I'm looking for reassurance until I talk to the vet. Have your cats ever experienced something similar? How was it treated? It's no big deal, right?

I'm not sure how relevant my cat is to yours, but what's the snot look like? Is it clearish, or nasty green? My elderly cat has developed over the last year (or more, I can't remember) what is pretty much a permanent cold and is always sneezing and snuffly, especially in his left nostril. The vet is at a loss but says that as long as the snot isn't a nasty color it's not anything to worry very much about. Although having my face sneezed in by a runnynose cat is no fun . . . .

Oh my goodness, our little-est one had herpes-related upper respiratory infections at about 6 weeks and he flares up all the time, which results in shockingly huge globules of mucus flying about the house from his dainty little nose. It's horrific. Plus the sneezing takes a lot out of him, poor little guy, but so does prednisone, so we don't bother with it. We spike his food with ground up lysine (our vet sent us to a pharmacist who makes up a liver paste, but he eats his food with the ground up OTC lysine tablets just fine, so we don't bother). The research on lysine's effectiveness in reducing symptoms of herpes infections is mixed, but it seems to help my cat. I still call him booger-nose, though.
