WANT these lamps that Ardiril just showed me on Twitter, even though I don't have enough empty space in my house for them to look as cool as they do in this pic.
I'm doing some lamp design myself. Last one was a magic cube 4x4x5. Super power LED. About as bright as 15W bulb, but it's battery powered and very light. The shade is a cube that looks like 3D moire silk.
Yeah I assume the neck of the lamp is a spring or something. (On the left you can tell where the base probably ends, where the cord lifts off the floor a bit.)
These would only look good if you had the open space for the cord to lay about like that. That's what sells the illusion.
To me it looks like they actually hang from the ceiling. I could be wrong but if it really is a light fixture - those wouldn't be too difficult to DIY.
If you look at the first photo in the slideshow, lower down on the linked webpage describing these lamps, they seem to be suspended from the ceiling with what looks like clear nylon thread. You could probably make your own for way less than the $250 quoted as the price. Try some thin fishing line.
