Those weird Russian immigrants. I imagine that a wet winter would produce more growth, and tumbleweed are supposed to tumble (for seed distribution).

When I was a kid, there as a news report from one of the desert communities East of San Diego.

A kid had been chasing a tumbleweed and the weed blocked out a driver's seeing the kid and the kid got run over and killed.

This has colored my opinion of tumbleweeds, lo on this many years.
