22 January 2010

'All-Weather' Radio III This should be the last day of "Storm Week"* in California and I have 3 more hours of 'weather-themed' music collected (Rain, Sunshine, Snow & Wind songs), so let's do it... At Noon Pacific Storm Front Time, 3PM East Coast US, 8PM UK, 11:30PM Tehran, 5AM Seoul, 8AM New Zealand, or just the top of the next hour.

[More:]
* How convenient to get a break from the stormy weather for the Weekend before another front moves in on Monday. Usually it's the other way around. While the rainiest week around here in years (it's been drought-y between El Ninos) it hasn't quite set rainfall records, but yesterday saw a record low barometric pressure in many areas, under 29 inches or about 980 millibars. No pressure, dude.
If you tuned in right on time and are wondering "WTF?", you're hearing the soundtrack to a series of short animated features called "The Weatherman"

Carole King - It Might As Well Rain Until September
Evelyn Knight - Powder Your Face With Sunshine (and smile, darn ya, smile!)
Len - Steal My Sunshine
Gordon Lightfoot - Rainy Day People
Baz Luhrman - Sunscreen (I don't care if Vonnegut didn't write it, do you?)
Madness - The Sun And The Rain
Magazine - About The Weather
Barry Fucking Manilow - I Made It Through The Rain (After his performance last night with AlmostFormerlyConan, is it safe to play anything by Barry? Anyway, where else are you going to hear the lyrical line "And I found myself respected"?)

Anybody out there listening? If so, join me in the #bunnies room to complain about the Manilow...

Melanie with The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)
Ronnie Milsap - Smokey Mountain Rain
Milli Vanilli - Blame It On The Rain (no, I blame it on the lip-syncing)
Ken Nordine - Looks Like It’s Going to Rain (the deep voice of a million commercials - including the Levis psychedelic ads of the 70s - from his 'Word Jazz' series; I must remember to throw him into the mix more often)
Vaughn Monroe - Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
Sam Bush - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
Eric Clapton - Let It Rain (final score: Let It Snow - 6, Let It Rain - 1)
Anne Murray - Snowbird (with my weakness for Annie and Gordon Nanosecond, I guess I'm Canadian at heart, eh? Except for the weather...)

Billy Myers - Kiss the Rain
Les Paul & Mary Ford - The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise
Stan Freberg - The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise (this is one of the more subtle pop music covers comedian Freberg did in the '50s; others like his "Banana Boat Song" were highlighted by frequent interruptions and open conflict between musicians)
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
Richie Havens - Here Comes The Sun
The Beatles - I'll Follow the Sun (here comes the sun, there go the Beatles...)
The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
Johnnie Ray - The Little White Cloud That Cried (okay, not a great selection of 'cloud' songs available...)

Peter Paul and Mary - Blowin' In The Wind
Bob Dylan - Blowin' In The Wind (back-to-back blowin'! who else gives you that?don't answer that!)
Prince - Purple Rain (the short version, because, well... 8:44? I think not.)
R.E.M. - So Central Rain (sorry about that, chief)
Eddie Rabbitt - I Love A Rainy Night (Eddie Rabbitt should be the official MetaChat Country Music Bunny, OMG)
Crowded House - Four Seasons In One Day (yeah, I've heard the joke about some places "if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes, it'll change")
The Rivieras - California Sun (intended totally ironically, of course; it's 44F at 2PM)
Bob Seger - Against The Wind (I woke two mornings this week to the sound of thunder - Seger, get outa my head!)
Brian Setzer Orchestra - There's a Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder (if Setzer gets any more retro, he'll be rockin' out to Gregorian Chants)
Paul Simon - Was A Sunny Day (now stay tuned for a double dose of Mandolin Weather!)
posted by oneswellfoop 22 January | 17:05
Rod Stewart - Mandolin Wind
Bruce Hornsby and the Range - Mandolin Rain
(Mandolins must be real all-weather instruments)
Super Furry Animals - Hello Sunshine
Patrick Swayze - She's Like The Wind (I just had the weirdest thought/bad joke.. Wouldn't it be the Ultimate Cosmic Irony if Swayze's ghost was haunting Whoopi Goldberg right now?)
James Taylor - Fire And Rain
B.J. Thomas - Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head
Tipsy - Wet Rainbow (from a free music sampler titled "Fiscal Apocalypse")
Weather Girls - It's Raining Men (I held off playing this as long as I could... wait'll youhear what I saved for last - in about 30 minutes)

Crowded House vs Snoop Dogg (mixed by Go Home Productions) - Return of the Weather Episode
Paul Weller - Early Morning Rain
Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
Stevie Wonder - You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
Glenn Yarborough - Baby The Rain Must Fall
Dennis Yost and Classics IV - Stormy
Frank Zappa - Don`t Eat The Yellow Snow
Zoe - Sunshine on a Rainy Day
Tay Zonday - Chocolate Rain

...and with the playing of that internet-overexposed song, it's time for me to step away from the mic I never turned on. More music soon on MetaRadio!
