And I think I remember the Speck saying something about her and the Don moving, but I don't recall the reason why. I'll be a mommy-type and ask, "Does he have a job over there yet? Do you have all your paperwork intact?"

TL, we're moving because our jobs are dead ends and painful, the cost of living here is inSANE, the weather sucks, and I desperately miss my friends and family. I lived in Portland for eight years, and we'll be going back to a wonderful community of friends and family and job connections. We don't have jobs yet (hey, anyone need a usability expert or an interior designer/AutoCAD drafter?) but something will turn up. Paperwork is getting there, but we need £££ for the Visa application.

average+/f/chicago!

Also, I have finally realized that when I'm not home and people ask me where I'm from, and I answer "Chicago" and they ask "Oh! What part?" they do not actually mean "which neighborhood?" they mean "Wheaton?" "Oak Park?" "Evanston?" "Skokie?" Honestly, folks, if I lived in one of the suburbs or surrounding cities, I would not say I was "from Chicago". At least now I know the answer to the question is "just North of downtown" not "Boystown".

40/f/Maine.

crush-onastick, when I lived in Chicago (briefly), I noticed that even when I did tell people which neighborhood, they would always correct me to line up with their preconceptions of what neighborhood I belonged in, e.g., "Ukranian Village? Oh, you mean Wicker Park!" I don't know that I ever heard a conversation about neighborhoods that didn't center around a boundary dispute.

I gave up on neighborhood names, and just started giving the closest intersection... which always started a conversation about the never-ending bridge repair.
