I thought that was terrible. I didn't even enjoy it ironically. Is there something I'm missing? Admittedly, I did listen to it on my tinny phone speakers, so perhaps sone nuance was lost.
Also, did Sonny Sharrock ever cover this song? He should have.
Philistines! For what it's worth, my enjoyment of Bobby Bryant's version is not ironic. I just think it's a hell of a lot of fun and a really great contrast from the original (which I love to death). Bunch of brass just knocking the song on its ass using mostly brute force, and then those swelling Big Band washes on the major key chorus turns, guitar sitting under it all like "oh hey hi guys, I'm still the star of the song, right? Right? Guys?"
If I went to a show and the band played this I would not be able to stop smiling and laughing.
I like it. Like it was written by Tower of Power. I think you could do a very cool treatment of it this way as a polished production piece and it would sound pretty sweet.
