I remember this product on sale in England in the 70s. I had no idea it dated from the 40s or 50s. Needless to say, the 80s sounded its death knell.

I wish they still made tvs like this one.

And, I got a "computer radio" very much like this one 27 years ago as a present. I only just last month retired it, and it still works great.

essexjan, that ad is so wrong in so many ways.

They used to sell that product in the States, too- I remember my grandmother using it in the 70s. (They looked like little caramel candies- some kind of appetite suppressant. I shudder to think what was in it.)

I think it was made of some kind of guar gum or something like that. It was intended to expand in your stomach to make you feel full. On that basis, I would expect it was probably also fairly uncomfortable to expel too.
