Radio One Hit Wonders in just about 15 minutes. Do drop in if you are up late or early.
A subject near and dear to my heart... I'd mention a few of my dozens of favorites, but then you wouldn't be allowed to play them, so I'll mention my LEAST favorite... "The Macarena". Now, even though it's on some lists as the BIGGEST One-Hit Wonder of all time, you don't have to play it. You're welcome.

Heh. We are on!
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 01:16
Kicking it off:
Lee Majors - Unknown Stuntman
Amanda Marshall - Let It Rain

For some reason, the twitter radio announcements are coming out like this: http://metaradio.info/
posted by taz 02 December | 01:20
hmm, maybe twitter hates links with 4 character TLDs.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 01:22
twitter's all about squeezing everything into 140 characters... so an extra character on an address probably makes 'em crazy...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 01:30
This is a fun set!
posted by taz 02 December | 01:35
loved the Lee Majors song to kick it off... good thing he had another job to fall back on...

I wonder if there are other songs like "Funkytown" that were hits for TWO different One Hit Wonders (Lipps Inc. in the '70s and Pseudo Echo in the '80s)
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 01:38
Okay, now you're just pandering to me. Spirit in the Sky again WOOOOOOOO!
posted by taz 02 December | 01:39
...and you just answered my question: "Spirit in the Sky"... Norman Greenbaum in the '60s and Doctor & the Medics in the '80s...

WHATCG? (where have all the cowboys gone)
posted by taz 02 December | 01:43
Funky Town (Lipps Inc)makes me think of pizza. Many years ago in Ontario the law for "adult entertainment clubs" required the place to sell at least as much in food as they did in booze. Beer was $1.20 but when you ordered one you got a beer for 60 cents and a piece of pizza for 60 cents. After the first few beers the pizza started to pile up. Funky Town was big with strippers about that time.

Shawn Mullins - Lullaby
Timex Social Club - Rumors
Pseudo Echo - Funky Town
Doctor And The Medics - Spirit In The Sky
Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone

Oh, wow... Georgia Satellites. Have not thought of them for a long time.
posted by taz 02 December | 01:51
I really thought they had a chance to stick around a bit longer.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 01:54
I'm going thru my collection pulling One Hit Wonders for a playlist of my own... you've already played 4 on my list... surprised you got Thunder Island... NOBODY seems to remember that one...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 01:56
oh hell yes. Thunder Island gets played at least once a week round here. Say, do you remember Jerry Doucette's Mama Let Him Play?
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 01:58
Not only does that make 5, but I played it earlier tonight in my no-theme pop set...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 01:59
Going back a bit on the next one.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:01
Johnny Clegg And Savuka - Scatterlings Of Africa
Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Jay Fergusson - Thunder Island
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
David Dundas - Jeans On
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:03
Jerry Doucette? Too Canadian... barely broke the bottom of the US charts and got no airplay in California (and '76-'78 was when I was deeply in the commercial radio)
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:05
sooper-dooper!!
posted by taz 02 December | 02:06
Okay, that was one of those made-up Canadian acts, right? I'm sure I'd remember somebody sampling "Rose Garden" AND "Get Up and Boogie" in the same song...

Now, Sniff & the Tears I remember... (and makes 7)

Kon Kan was a play on Can Con which was what we called the 33% Canadian Content radio provision of the time.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:20
or to put it another way, I Can Help?
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:22
Taco - Puttin On The Ritz
Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon
Sniff 'n The Tears - Drivers Seat
Billy Swan - I can Help
Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the middle with you
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:22
Stealers Wheel? It's so hard to keep this smile off my face. Oh yeaaaaaaaaah.
posted by taz 02 December | 02:23
I have a great story about Billy Swan - I can Help but it involves a gal named Ruby and acts that can get you arrested for talking about on the internets.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:25
this may fail the One Hit rule on a technicality, since the voice of Stealers Wheel, Gerry Rafferty had a big hit (Baker Street) and a top 10, but less memorable, followup (Right Down the Line)...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:25
Hey even buy Internet radio licensing rules Rafferty and Stealers are different acts so phhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht!
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:27
a gal named Ruby

sounds poignant.

posted by taz 02 December | 02:27
oh so much taz...
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:29
okay, but Rafferty himself is in the Two Hit Wonder category... which is a whole 'nother fun thing...

but then so is The Knack... their follow-up, the even more suggestive "Good Girls Don't" did barely crack the Top 10...

Hi arse. Jeez, this 'Hooked on a Feeling' song sure is cheesy. It was a none-hit wonder in the UK, a new song to me.

Hi jan!
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:37
I have memories associated with Blue Swede when their record first came out, but they involved more violence than sex...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:37
Thunderclap Newman - Something In The Air
The Knack - My Sharona
Blue Swede - Hooked On A Feeling
Spin Doctors - Two Princes
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:37

I remembered (and have) the other song, but I wanted pseudo-authoritative backup...
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:43
Some of those late 80s/early 90s r'n'b songs were very grim, weren't they? She's singing 'Let The Music Play' as if she's on her way to an execution.

I remember seeing Captain Abrahams singing 'Trapped' on Top of the Pops and remembering how angry he looked, really furious. Man, lighten up, you've got a hit record and you're on TOTP!

A bit of trivia; Darius Rucker was the Country Music Association New Artist of the Year Award winner last month.
posted by arse_hat 02 December | 02:52
Shannon - Let the Music Play
Real Life - Send Me An Angel
White Town - Your Woman
Robbie Nevil - C'est la vie

Last 3 songs coming up.

Hootie finally makes good...

Am I nuts, or does the vocalist on "Your Woman" sound so much like a guy?
posted by oneswellfoop 02 December | 02:55
I thought it was a guy for a long time.

This must be a client-specific thing. The links work fine in Twidroid (phone) and DestroyTwitter.
