Mushroom Ask MeCha. 99.9% sure I've identified this correctly. [More:]Can you tell me if these are indeed Birch Bracket A.K.A. Piptoporus betulinus? They were all growing on a dead birch log. I understand that most shelf fungus are edible, and I know Piptoporus betulinus is, but I just wanted to double check before I fry 'em up and eat 'em.

I know enough not to eat this one!
Also, can I just say piptoporus a whole bunch? Piptoporus piptoptorus piptopopuss piptoptomus!

You could eat the amanita. It contains the hallucinogen muscarine. It will the be in your urine and someone could drink it and repeat the process.

It's technically edible but it will probably be like gnawing on the birch tree.

Heh. I've seen some mushrooms in the lawn at work, and they look a lot like the "airplane" kind. White, bronze stains at the top, small skirt in the bottom, everything.

One of these days I may show up really "creative" at work.

It may be like gnawing on a birch tree, but they've been described as very flavoursome, and slightly bitter. Enough butter and garlic on anything and I'll enjoy it...

Yah, Specklet, how was it? Wait. Are you still among the living??

Well, they're definietly birch brackets, but I don't think we'll try eating them.

They're technically edible, but really only when young. They're also called the razor strop fungus, because they can be used for stropping straight razors. They were used as tinder as well, and are so corky that they've been used to line hat bands, as well.

Don't sound like good eatin'.
