Istanbul NOT Constantinople
posted by gomichild 08 November | 01:30
gomi, this:

Every day I remove hundreds of comments from angry Turks/Greeks who think this lighthearted cover of a 1950's song is an attack on their political views.

made me laugh. Most of the people here still call it Constantinople. But then, they still call Iran "Persia," so...

After a few thousand years it just all gets too confusing.

An easy solution: all places to be referred to solely by their latitude and longitude.

The thread title instantly reminded me of the numerous Paradox megathreads on SA's Let's Play forum and (if you know what I'm talking about, you'll understand) Byzantium!!!

BYZANTIUM!!!

I want my junior high geography grade fixed. For years I always answered "St petersburg" instead of the then current "Leningrad" on the geography tests, making it the only red mark on my tests. Now I wanna call up that teacher and say See? I was right!"

St. Petersburg/Leningrad is also the cause of some consternation now among Trekkies because of how Chekov refers to it as the latter, twice, in the original series.
