Photograph of a chimpanzee funeral I've never been sympathetic to the animal rights movement. But behavior like this really does make me question my existing beliefs and assumptions.
I saw that in yesterday's paper and thought it was incredibly moving. Because chimps are quite vicious and aggressive creatures, so to see them all standing silently and watching their dead friend is really quite amazing.

Likewise, this post on the blue shows that animals probably know and feel more than we can ever tell.

It really is wonderful how much alike we are. Even in our deepest emotional moments.

Yeah, they're capable of great savagery and great sensitivity.

They really are kin to us.

403 for me, even going through the front page. Weird.

Yeah, 403 for me, too.

If you're still getting blocked, go to this National Geographic slideshow (you'll have to allow Flash). It's the second image in the series.

But don't stop there: NatGeo's story behind the photo.

I immediately captioned this as: "You're not getting away with this, motherfuckers."

Magpie funerals shake me like this photo did. They always seem to begin with one magpie screaming, and then a few gather around the dead, holding still, looking on for a very quiet moment, as if they're saying goodbye.

Joe Beese made a good post on the blue today linking a good story on Magpie and other animal funerals, check it.
