Full of WIN. Drug house update.[More:]

Looks like things are going to reach the denouement stage soon.

Following the action by the council president (warning letter) and police chief (mitigation meeting) against the landlord, there were several days of quietude that seemed to indicate an attempt to present a better public face. (No obvious gang members for about two weeks, for example.) But there was still plenty of stupid noisy behavior and this week car traffic stepped up markedly. As noted, they moved most of this activity to the night, so 8pm-2am was a pretty steady stream of cars coming and going every 20-30 minutes or so, and a good portion of these involved yelling up to the porch. Almost nobody was honking late at night, though, and I was just biding my time.

I think the residents -- assuming they cared at all -- and landlord felt they had an ace in the hole, being my angry voicemails, which Mr. Hmong landlord interpreted as racist. So it could be they felt that they would pretend for a while and make me look bad if I complained. (Of course, MY ace in the hole was calling the local paper and asking why a city employee was doing nothing about a drug house he owned in contravention of city ordinance and a very public city policy. Even though I worried about getting singed along the way.)

Thursday and Friday was a lot of traffic, as mentioned, but tonight was practically dead. About 15 minutes ago, though, I heard a car drop some folks off and speed away, then a commotion. I look outside and we have a group of people struggling to rouse an unconscious body on the front walk, and another guy beating his head with his fists and looking distraught (trespassing on the neighbors' lawn, too, but let's focus). 911! I was placed in the position of having to hope whoever it was wouldn't get up and disappear inside before any response. Well, even though I had to tell 911 three or four times that they were NOT fighting (after all, that was two PRIOR 911s of mine), but there WAS an unconscious body that I had not seen move at all, it was only a minute or two before the cops showed. Some of the group had gone inside, though, but this concerned guy was still out there.

Well, they prodded Mr. Unconscious and after some flashlight in the face and, I dunno, cheek slapping, he sat up. But lo! What is that, yonder? Why, it's some handcuffing and body searching! Mr Distraught, who I think is the "boss" or at least older bro type who has stared me down more than once, is being placed in the back of a squad.

Paramedics soon arrived and that guy ended up in the ambulance and on his way to the ER.

So, I would like to be a fly on the wall in the meeting with the landlord that is sure to follow. How's that mitigation plan working out?

You know, he only cleaned up the broken glass last Sunday. Can't even remember now how many weeks prior the window was smashed out. (As a landlord myself, I couldn't fathom why HE was cleaning up after his tenants like their maid. Talk about role reversals. That's cause for eviction!) Anyway, I guess this is the "arrest" after which he will by his own words need to do something. What an anus.
Ye gods that's some crazy stuff, dhartung.

I guess this really is a NIMBY thing, but from this distant perspective I wonder where those people will buy their drugs once you have shut this place down, dhartung. Think of the children!

Good luck, dhartung. I can only hope with my n-from-hell that he will fuck up again and lose his flat once more at some point in the future. He's yet to move back in - he gutted the place, so will need to put in a new kitchen before he can move back but I'm sure it will be in the next few weeks.

As the worm turns, essexjan ...

I'm off to call on my neighborhood "leader" who will contact the council president who will contact the landlord about this 911 call. Again conversations I would dearly love to overhear.

Lying awake last night I was thinking in terms of Gladwell's Blink and how early on we just tend to know when a place is going to be a problem. Unfortunately hunches aren't something that will put people in jail.

I've been there, so I know what you're going thru. I had neighbors across the alley that had all kinds of drug stuff going on involving midnight altercations with their customers and each other. What really bothered me was the steady stream of people hard up for money and/or drugs that had a perfect view of my back door and garage, always seeing when we were leaving and where our bikes and lawnmower, etc. were kept.
I was lucky in that they were users of their product and so neglected to pay the rent which got them evicted. I hated the fact that the situation made me the arbiter of proper behavior and I constantly felt the need to track what the hell was going on; loud arguments, guy claiming a woman stabbed him, car left blocking access to the street to the north for three days....
It sucked.
