Dali all night long - or GYOFB, art flavour. So the National Art Gallery of Victoria had an exhibition of Dali's work showing. It finished at 5pm today. The exhibition was open to the public all last night.[More:]
Elephantday and I trotted along. 11pm sounded like a nice time to get there, have a wine or two, amble around the exhibit, and head off home before 2am.

Not so much.

The queue at 11pm went well down to the Arts Centre. Not long after that - it reached Flinders St. Which is over the Yarra River from the Art Gallery. The queue itself went for well over a kilometer. In fact - the length of the queue was longer than the distance from the gallery to my front door.

It was insane. It took an hour, but eventually we made it inside. There we were greeted by my sister, who was a little hysterical. She works back of house in the kitchen, and had started at 4pm. The kitchen was supposed to close at 11pm. There was no way that that was going to happen. She gave me a stern lecture about making sure that I held the sign up high if I ordered food, and stumbled back off to work.

We went into the big hall bit to queue again, and watched the band and burlesque dancers. I also spotted my sister's best friend serving drinks, so I left eday to mind our possie in the line, and I went and scored us a few plates of food and a few glasses of red wine. For free, y'all. Nice.

That made queueing a lot more fun, and by the time we got to the ticket desk, we were firm friends with the people in the line around us.

It was 3am before we finally got in to see the show. then again, daylight savings started while we were queueing, so it was only a 3hour queue, not 4.

Once in, there were so many people it was hard to see the paintings. We had a quick look, but by that stage we were so tired the paintings were beginning to make *sense*.

We stumbled out the other end, and I said goodbye to eday while I pottered aimlessly in the gift store for awhile trying to find a birthday present for my sister. I ended up buying a few presents for myself as well. Like this. The shower cap, that is... the grin came for free.

Anyway, it was a great night... even though most of it was spent queueing.
Oh! I forgot to say - when we were waiting for the food, I highly embarrassed eday by holding the sign on my head. We got the food though, so TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Also - my sister ended up finishing at 7.30 or so the next morning. And started her next shift at 10am. I don't envy her.

It was certainly an interesting night, although most of it was spent queuing and jonathanstrange didn't embarrass me too much.

Glad you had fun! I probably would have turned around and found something else to do if I'd seen that line. You are an intrepid bunch.

What. Can... can they do that?

Probably CF. I had a gig doing inventory that started at 7pm one night and didn't finish until well after 10am the next day. And I had another shift scheduled for 11am that day. (And it was about that distance apart from each other. Ugh.)
It didn't help me that the 11am shift dude was late and didn't tell me that it was just going to be me and him doing an entire paper product warehouse by ourselves. I got home around 7pm the next day. I really don't know how I made it home without falling asleep at the wheel.

The idea of seeing a Dali exhibit at 3 AM sounds really fun, though not the standing in line part.

Yeah, I think it's illegal here. But it happens anyway. I think her boss will be in trouble for it though.

Damn. I really wanted to see the Dali show, but despite living within easy walking distance I missed it. However I pretty much refuse to line up for anything or any reason (except where it's unavoidable), and I don't think I would have had the fortitude to appreciate art at 3am after hanging around in St Kilda road all night.
