3-point Thursday update [More:]
1. A week away from my holiday and the woman who sits next to me at work has come into the office all week with a streaming cold. I felt the sore throat starting on Tuesday, and although I've been dosing myself up with chellated zinc and vitamin C, I can still feel the damn thing coming on. Crap. Hopefully it'll be gone by next Friday.

2. My new sofa arrives tomorrow!! Yaaay! (But I still have to get the floor replaced, which will mean re-packing all my books, CDs and other bits and pieces, and more disruption for the cats).

3. I got new contact lenses yesterday - soft toric lenses. I've got two different brands to wear on a trial basis, to see which is most comfortable. It's amazing how much better I can see with the toric than with my old soft lenses.
1. Going to "Girl's Night: The Musical!" tonight. I hear it's kinda cheesy (ya think?), but I think they serve drinks, so I think it'll work out OK. I hope they have snacks, too, I could use one.
2. Very quiet few days here. Have enjoyed lounging around and getting back to the gym.
3. New York City’s unemployment rate jumped to 10.3 percent in August. HOLLA.

That was 3 lines, but no point at all.

1. The Fella and I rearranged our entire apartment, switching the rooms around. We started with a big bedroom full of clutter & wasted space, a tiny living room too cramped for company, and an even tinier study. We now have a spacious living room, a breezy study (which can double as a small dining room), and a cozy little nest of a bedroom. I love this.

2. Though all the furniture is moved, we still have boxes and baskets of stuff to unpack and dust and arrange. I really love this arrangement.

3. We have guests coming Monday night, so I have the whole weekend to get it looking great! Did I mention that I absolutely love it?

1. We got a cat. She's a tortie with little white patches. The shelter named her Sookie and we liked that name for her.
2. This is the second day in a row I woke up at a reasonable time and have not felt the need for a nap. This is a MAJOR recovery advancement. I hope it sticks.
3. We have a Wonder/Hostess outlet at the corner that also stocks milk, butter, eggs and such. They have some very delicious whole grain breads for little more than a dollar a loaf. They also have very cheap Hostess cream-filled cupcakes in many different forms of packaging including the 48 double-pack case.

1. Today has just been a suckassed day of fail. From a pissed off owner posting a 20 page tirade on all the doors to being told way too much information about someone else's personal life at work and dropping a heavy ass journal on top of my foot, to being ambushed by my mother as soon as I got home.

2. I'm contemplating a nap, but I know that will fuck up my sleep schedule EVEN MORE. But I'm tired and I think I'm just going to go ahead and conk out for a bit until I feel slightly less pissy.

3. All my parents do is fight and argue and snipe. And my mother wonders why my brother and I don't come around more often. Could it be that being in that environment is incredibly stressful?!

1. I ground up some corn I grew (japonica striped maize), dried and then used that corn meal to make corn bread which I am now eating. Baked it in a cast iron skillet and I hope some of that iron is making its way into my body, I could use it.

2. Super duper loving the crap out of Heidi Swanson's Super Natural Cooking. What took me so long to get it.

3. Cleaned up my sewing area! It was a pretty big and stressful mess. I celebrated its new cleanliness by sewing the cats two new toys. I fill them half with coriander seed and half with fabric scraps. They're big fans of listening for the sound of coriander seeds shaking.

1. They installed new front steps on the house today. The old one's were pealing paint over disintegrating concrete patches over old stone. The new ones are very bright limestone.

2. The garage roof is going to cost more than my car.

3. I wish that I had the vacation time to go away next week and avoid the whole G20 kerfuffle. There are concrete barriers going up everywhere, they've taken all of the mailboxes away, the protesters are going to be in the first park that I bike to work through and the National Guard is going to be camped out in the other one. I've got a 5K on the 27th but all of the trails are going to be closed off and the YMCA is closing during the G20 so I won't be able to train easily. The whole city is planning to shutdown and board up their windows and hide in their basements.

1. Another manuscript rejection this week. :(
I have, however, decided not to accept defeat. Going through a major revision and I will resubmit elsewhere soon. This baby is going to get published by the end of the year for sure.

2. Starting to look for jobs for next year in case funding to keep my position does not come through.

3. I have cut back on my social drinking quite a bit lately. Very proud of myself.

1. Facebook friending people from high school I used to do theater with. Much scary nostalgia.

2. Driving from Maine to Virginia this weekend and then from Virginia to Florida with my sister and nephew. Then back again after about a week. DriveDriveDrive.

3. Very flatlined emotionally. Having a hard time with middle age.

1. More job rejections - six so far this week, all in the last two days.

2. wondering where my place is supposed to be in this world.

3. saw a kickass Mr. Rogers t-shirt in a consignment shop this afternoon and bought it to make myself feel better about wondering where my place is supposed to be in this world.

Yay, Ardiril!

*hugs* LT

1. I've run out of the rope of patience at work. An intractable problem remains intractable, and I have four, count 'em, four immovable objects that I must move with my irresistible force. Somehow.

2. I've hit some sort of zen state with regards to my house and personal life, and I like it; I just don't know how to keep it up.

3. #2 is keeping me awake - can't sleep, doubts will eat me.

1. No progress on the crime house front yet. Lots of activity today, and there are still about six cars parked out front. Well, maybe I'll get to call the cops again, look at it that way.

2. Went to local landlords association meeting. Good presentation on CO detectors (required in all apartment houses in my state by April 1). As a professional group they require approval of members. My dad didn't want anything to do with them, for some reason. I'm determined to get back to a point where my mom doesn't feel like she's a slumlord because of my dad, and can speak out on issues the way she used to.

3. Looking for assisted living for my dad. The nursing home is holding an "eviction" meeting on Monday, because my mom didn't tell me his Medicare ran out and we should have moved him ASAP then. They're going to get stiffed and be an unsecured creditor in the bankruptcy, I'm afraid.

4. Can't fit in three. Tomorrow we have our own eviction hearing for one of our two remaining tenants. This one hasn't paid us anything since spring and may not have paid my dad anything last year at all. We could have had a year of a paying tenant if he hadn't kept all this to himself. Anyway, it will probably get continued because of the open foreclosure and they'll keep freeloading. Never believe your tenants are "like family", it affects your judgement.

1. Pics of trip to Vegas & Death Valley coming soon.

2. Very, very sad about the death of Mary Travers.

3. Not quite as sad about the death of Jim Carroll. My alternative sister loved The Basketball Diaries, but I just Never. Got. It.

3. job

Really, nothing else is registering right now. I'm so relieved to be out of here, so overjoyed that finally an effort is paying off, that someone's willing to take a chance on me. It's a slight promotion, a slight shift towards a more normal schedule, but primarily the benefit is freedom from health-ruining stress and more opportunities to transfer to something even better (rather than being locked in place as a result of being indispensible). On my next day off, there will be a bonfire of the past 2.5 years of saved rejection letters (sufficient to wallpaper my apartment with) soaked with vodka poured out in memory of my long-deceased social life. And then I will start over.

I should say, not that I think anyone is so desperate as to want to move to Pittsburgh, but if ever the idea sounds appealing- since there is still a reasonable amount of hiring here- feel free to avail yourself of my couch and assistance. Really.

1. Missed out on running the Mooloolaba Half-marathon tomorrow because entries were full when I went to enter :-(

2. Survived today as the most senior staff member in the division and, thankfully, no shit hit any fans today.

3. Friday!
