I'm beside myself with anticipation for Porcupine Tree's new album. So much so that I jumped the gun yesterday and went to the record store before it was released.[More:] Well, whaddya know, they had a used "special edition" copy of Stupid Dream, with the 5.1 mix, and "extra" features, one of which is the video for Piano Lessons. In celebration of the impending release of the new album, I ripped the 3.5 minute video (edit from full-length album track) for your quality dining and dancing pleasure. 28 mb -- it takes a while to load, apparently. (better sounding than the one that's on Youtube, anyway)
I've never really managed to catch the fever for Porcupine Tree even though they seem, on paper, like they'd be very much my kind of thing. I absolutely loved the most recent O.S.I. album, though, and Gavin's work on that is a big part of the reason.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my favorite band sucks, but that Gavin Harrison guy has six arms or something. Both of my favorite bass player are named Colin, which is also weird.

As far as Steven Wilson's writing, I know it's not actually all that complex or unique when you break it down part by part, but I love the way things flow. There's nothing forced, like with a lot of "prog" that sounds like people super-gluing little song snippets together for no good reason. And his mixes are Teh Beefy. Those other guys could be in any other band they wanted to pretty much, but they're in Wilson's for some reason.

The thing about Gavin is that he has six arms and good taste.
