CNN is stupid. Current top headline at cnn.com: Rep. Wilson raises more than $200,000[More:]

And buried waaay down in the 7th paragraph: "The appeal for cash came as Wilson's Democratic opponent in next year's congressional race, Rob Miller, reported raking in $750,000 as a result of the outburst during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress."
Oops. Didn't mean to clutter up the front page like that.

I agree that it's a bizarre way to frame the story.

...a total that dwarfs the $67,000 he has took in during the entire first half of the year.

"Has took in."

I think you're being a bit paranoid. The CNN article is reporting WIlson's latest total (which I believe is new information). It's not meant to be an overview of the whole story.

Not paranoid. Just pointing out that it's a pretty blinkered way to report the story, considering there were no previous CNN articles (that I could find) about Miller's dramatic increase in fund-raising. It's like seeing a headline that reads "Olympic Athlete Bench Presses 1000 Pounds" and then the last sentence of the story reads "Earlier in the round, his teammate bench pressed 1100 pounds, setting a new world record."

Nah, it's just a product of Wilson's one-off announcement being more news-friendly than Miller's slowly ticking-up counter. News orgs are incredibly lazy like that.

Miller has framed his story as "hoping to raise a million", which is too wishy-washy to report in itself and makes amounts smaller than a million unremarkable.

(the PR/spin industry wouldn't be so huge if news organisations reported stories based on merit rather than how conveniently they're packaged)

Wilson is up to $750,000 right now, while Miller is over the 1 million mark.

I'm really annoyed that this guy's lapse got any media attention at all. It's gotten about 10 times as much coverage as the speech it interrupted. That speech was really important and talked about some really pressing issues. Why the media chooses to look away from what's important to focus on a steaming pile of dung is completely opaque to me.

I am ashamed to admit that I live in a country where this takes place and half the country is proud of a dude acting like a 12-year-old.

In other news, HUAC has been refounded as a private subsidiary of Fox News.
