Hard-to-believe headlines:
College kids’ parents grapple with letting go
Many freshmen ... are energized by a new start. But for parents, it can be a tough time.

I mean, economy aside, I remember when it was more like "The kids are in college ... whoopee! Aruba!"

what perfect timing. Sprog #1 left today for her second year at University and it is still hard, mainly because we really enjoy each other's company and we're a pretty close-knit family. No more crazy guitar hero Wold tour sessions with me as lead vocalist (HAH!), no more Thursday popcorn sessions with bad movies, no more tossing a coin to see who gets to use the only car we have.....sigh.... good times

When my son was 7, we watched Arachnophobia. During a commercial, I hid his mother's giant stuffed spider under his chair and refilled his Kool-aid. Two commercials later, he went to pee and when he returned, I overturned his chair and yelled, "Spider". That kid did the classic foot-pumping, arm-flailing scream from hell. I scarred him for life, now he can't even kill the tiniest of spiders but calls for his girlfriend to do it instead.

I don't really get the problem with letting go. I love my son but he's almost twenty and I'd really like to see him on his way soon. He's got a few more semesters of county college to go and then he's either going to get a job or go to a university. Either way, he'll be moving out.
