I Want You To Scare The Shit Out Of Me.... [More:]

I'm reading the novel Let The Right One In, that the movie is based on. Good and creepy.

So mechazens...this thread is for recommending the scariest movies/books/websites/etc. Or even the scariest ideas you can come up with - stuff that truly creeps you out.
"Scaredy Cat" scared the bejeezus out of me as a kid. I still wouldn't want to watch it alone in the dark.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"

I could not stand to be in dark rooms after watching this. I would swear I'd see little glowing creatures in the corners of my room. The only thing, I remember seeing this in black and white, as well as color, so I thought there was an even older version.

"Lemora - A child's tale of the supernatural"

I finally found this!! I was at a sleepover in 7th grade or so, and we all watched this while in our sleeping bags lined up in the family room. I remember screaming out at certain points. I'm sure it's campy fun if I saw it now, but at the time....EEEEKKKK!!!!!!!

Fantasia.

What? It gave me nightmares when I was a kid.

Fantasia, deborah, really? I loved that movie. I think I was 7 the first time I saw it. I was in awe. I cried years ago when it was rereleased - and the theatre was sold out. I did think that something must have been wrong with me, because the scene with the devil really was my favourite part.

The Hurt Locker is terrifying. That one scene in the "I see dead people" flick where the girl comes up off the kitchen floor and into the hall, you know what I mean. I can't watch more than five or ten minutes of Children of the Corn either, and I get to a certain point in movies like Over the Edge and No Way Out where I just feel sick with fear and can't look anymore.

The first scene through to the end of the opening credit montage of the recent Dawn of the Dead remake is scary as hell, compelling and surprisingly believable, and as a bonus features the music of The Man In Black, Himself.

As far as scary stuff that I can come up with, well, take for instance people morphing into and coupling with different animals and maybe even sentient plants, you think if you give everybody their pick you'd see most subjects giving mammals like lynxes and zebras and Bengal tigers a try, maybe a few mind-controlling sentient alien plants bent on colonizing Earth through stimulation of endorphins, that kind of thing, everybody's all well and getting it on with nature. But what you wouldn't see is insects. I mean what kind of freaky shit is that? Are there people who dig bugs?

So I mean, yeah, mammals, I'm cool with, up to cetaceans and down to the lowliest and star-nosiest. Birds are great, though I find it hard to fake a cloaca. Snakes, now, if you've ever seen snakes fucking you know what I mean, that's some wild shit right there. Even plants, at least as long as there's some kind of alien mind-control stimulation of pleasure centers or seed-harvesting or what have you, I'm conceptually cool with that.

But insect and invertebrate furries, man, that shit is scary! I don't even know if it exists, but my mind reels! Of course the only way to conquer my fear is to embrace it. Here comes the internet to the rescue; don't fail me, libido!

Feed The Tree - Particularly, follow the Evidence and the Feed the Tree links.

Caitlín R. Kiernan is the foremost female author in dark fantasy ever since Poppy Z. Brite dropped out of the the field. In Kiernan's fiction you will not find the paranormal romance of a Nora Roberts nor the hackneyed pulp of Laurell Hamilton. You will find a healthy dose of the cerebral fear of a Shirley Jackson mixed with the deep time mysteries of Lovecraft. You will also find an imagination equal to Neil Gaiman and the unflinching voyeurism of a Clive Barker. Then, if you don't mind a bit of existential angst by way of Charlie Kaufman and the occasional use of a dictionary, then I I can highly recommend Kiernan's latest book, "The Red Tree".

That creepy thrill that people get from a good scary movie - I get it from numbers stations. I have the whole Conet Project on my MP3 player and some nights I sit in bed with the lights out and listen on the headphones and freak my shit out.

If I start talking about scary movies, I could be here all day. So, other stuff:

I share Slack's fascination with numbers stations. There's something so EERIE about them. I used to have a shortwave radio as a teenager, and would run across them sometimes, and it was like finding something you weren't supposed to know about.

"Silent Hill 2" is the only video game ever to literally give me nightmares. It is great, great, great. Play it at night in a dark room and it will FLIP YOU OUT. The mood and tension are incredible. (It's available for PC, not just consoles, and it's old so it should be cheap.)

I love to read crazy conspiracy theories like stories of Albert Bender and the "men in black." They're spookier than fiction because they don't come from a single source, and leave a lot of loose ends and unanswered questions.

Spoorloos. Scariest movie I've ever seen, because the horror is so mundane. Don't be fooled and rent the lame US Keifer Sutherland remake, The Vanishing. Despite having the same director as Spoorloos, it both sucks and blows.

The original Dracula noval by Bram Stoker is awesomely frightening. And Klaus Kinski as Nosferatu scared the crap out of me.

The old b&w movie, The Haunting, is also really scary, particularly watched in a dark house by yourself.

The Ring (both the original Japanese and American versions) are also really creepy.

If I ever want to creep myself out, I'll google 'Ghost Pictures'.
