It Takes A Village When Out Shopping For Groceries... [More:]

Tonight I finally did something I told myself I would never do - mainly, intercede on behalf of a child whose parents were negligent.

Miko and I were out grocery shopping tonight and this woman was shopping in front of us with two small four year olds.

The four year olds both had plastic bags as toys and were happily putting them on over their heads and stumbling around the aisles.

Without a second thought, I went up to one and grabbed it off of his head and said, "Don't do that - it's dangerous!" or something similar, and then went up to the mother and gave the bag to her, saying something about "don't let your kids do that!"

Later, she and her kids passed us by the check-out line, both children had two fresh bags and waved to me as they stumbled by.

What a dumbass. She probably lets them play with the hairdryer in the bathtub too.

I went to dinner with a friend, he mentioned he saw security escort a woman and her kids out of the grocery store earlier today. She had been beating them in the bulk candy section.

It made me sad... when I worked at that grocery chain fifteen years ago and we saw a woman doing something like that we called the police and gave them her plate number. I'd like to think those kids were saved from a bad situation because of a bunch of teenage grocery employees.

Years ago I had a woman customer who went around the store with her two small daughters in the cart. She came through my line, and the older one was sitting in the top of the carriage, pulling a plastic bag over her head. I timidly said to the woman (back when I was timid), "Do you think that's a good idea?" The woman snapped, tiredly, "I'm watching her." Which she really wasn't.

Another time, she had both girls in the main part of the cart, and in leaning, they tipped it over, crashing to the floor. Her soulution? She picked the cart up, stopped them from crying, put them back in the main part of the cart, where they proceeded to tip it over again! I still remember the older girls' name "Audry", because that's all you heard all over the store.."Audry! Audry!! AUDRY!!!"
